Strong noir, especially if you can get past the somewhat trite "cop falling for a dame before her hubby's body gets cold" theme. The tension keeps increasing throughout; there's a real seediness to the whole thing, helped by the beautiful lighting. Also a shout-out to the supporting cast, almost all of whom are memorable in a unique way.

Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) is a fairly subtle noir in the way it delivers its suspense. I prefer them to be more action-packed and dramatic, but it's well presented with comfortable performances from all involved, and that especially means the to in focus, Dana Andrews & Gene Tierney. They were excellent.

a solid noir where the police do the police things but then implausibly feel regret and held responsible for their evil deeds.

A cop facing consequences for his actions, not very realistic.

Restrained, but not boring. Well-constructed, straightforward story with a good protagonist.
