Merrills a good villain...andrews works but imdb trivia tells me ray milland played the character in a radio adaptation and man i would have loved to have seen him in this

The film lacks several aspects found in many of the best noirs - sharp dialogue, a tricky dame, a standout moment - but it still manages to be entertaining and somewhat tense throughout, although a darker ending would have been welcome. Andrews turns in a good performance as usual.

Top notch noir that could have been considered a bona fide classic if the production code hadn't forced Fox to tack on a wimpy ending. Andrews plays the tormented cop excellently as he skates the fine line between peace officer and hoodlum himself.

Fascinating plot. Dana Andrews is good. He's smart and manages to make a bad guy one we sympathize with, which increases the film's worth quite a bit. The ending does hurt it a bit - I was hoping for something nastier, or at least more ambiguous, but, y'know, production code. Nothing about this is particularly spectacular, but everything about it works well and the result is a classic noir.

Dana Andrews gives a first rate performance of conflicted cop Mark Dixon.The story is quite strong and gives us enough background to get care about Mark Dixon's dilemma and moves the picture along at a nice clip.

Textbook example of film noir that examines the blurred line between those who break the law and those who attempt to enforce it. The plot is neatly crafted, with enough twists to keep you interested, although Tierney's character feels like a bit of a spare part at times. The romance feels contrived, but I guess she acts as a foil for Andrews to explain all that stuff about his father. The photography, especially the street-level stuff, is excellent and gives the film a suitably gritty feel.
