Cute movie. I'm sure like most who would seek out this movie I felt a kinship with Blanchette's character although her psychosis is endearing and a sign of genius. Mine is just a sad guy screaming into the void at 4 people on an outdated film review site

Underwhelming and poorly paced. It took almost two thirds of the movie for the main premise of the film to actually get moving. Blanchett is good, as she always is, but the structure is too messy for Where'd You Go Bernadette to land emotionally in any way.

A strange, mixed bag (especially the impressively eclectic cast) is a bit of an odd fit for Linklater's shaggy, unfocused film-making style - it may have benefited from a director (and writer) who could burrow a little deeper into Blanchett's intriguing (and magnificently performed) portrait of mental disintegration. What is here is just strange enough, and original enough, to be thoroughly absorbing, even if the scattershot approach becomes wearying towards the finale.

aaaw man. I really liked the middle of the film. Blanchett shined in there. And then came the ending, which felt a little like 'Eat Pray Love'; This fucking obnoxious feeling being cast down my throat: "FEEL FUCKING INSPIRED BY THIS YOU TWAT!"

Very sappy, with awkward comedy tacked on, mediocre acting, and falls apart in key scenes (such as the intervention scene). I expected maybe a little bit more from Linklater.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a total mess, but it still managed to win me over. The first half, while not without its charms, is nearly laughable in its determination to explain everything about all the central characters in the most ineloquent and conspicuous possible ways. That said, the second half finally seems to do something with the characters Linklater so painstakingly (and exhaustively) establishes in the first half leading up to an ending that I honestly found quite touching.

It begins well (although just a bit pretentious) but towards the end it begins to feel unreal and unsynchronized with the beginning. Still a watchable movie with moments of great cinematography but the story and character progression feel hollow. The movie has charm though, and Blanchett is preeety good.

This is wonky as hell, but somehow still pretty enjoyable. This is not a movie that sets a high bar for itself. It's not trying to be a masterpiece. It feels like Linklater is in between breaths here, preparing for his next big project and keeping himself warm with a small film in the meantime. It definitely doesn't have his voice written all over it. And in all honesty, it's not great. But there are much, much worse ways to spend your time.

Wonderfully close to the book. I understand the absolute banana feeling that Bernadette has

Warm, just like a lot of late linklater has been. He has always had a great ability to create these wonderful characters and strong relationships between them and this is no different. It's a nice love letter to being an artist, and an artist that struggles with mental illness to boot. next time I have a breakdown I hope I am a millionaire genius that is beloved by a subset of people.

Since it's based on a bestseller, Linklater's treatment is almost certainly an improvement over the original. Blanchett gives a near-virtuoso performance (since I share a good many personality traits with her character, I know how right she got everything), Billy Crudup is perfectly cast as her mostly-absent husband, and Emma Nelson is marvelous as the too-good-to-exist daughter. Yes, the last half-hour is pretty sappy, but most of it is quite enjoyable. The Seattle rants are spot on.

So, it is an oddly charming movie about a disappearance of a person where the disappearance happens only about 30 minutes before the end of the movie. I don't know how the original book is arranged, but people who haven't read the book but only read the synopsis would be a little confused. ("Isn't she supposed to disappear?") It was as if Linklater wanted to make it as long as Boyhood, but had to shorten it at the last minute so he decide to edit out half of the later part of the movie.

Pretty strong for the first two-thirds, but really drifts to an ending.

I'm not quite sure I fell for its depiction of mental health -- this is evidently an upbeat depression comedy, by the way -- but this is undeniably a risky, bold film that dares to go beyond your inspirational journey with constant tone shifts and defying Blanchett's performance -- she goes from heart-warming to unbearably annoying in a second. I'm sure I will like this more in a rewatch.

A unique view on the personal need for artistic creation by showing the consequences of its absence. Decent performance by the actors that make it more enjoyable. There're some very clever edition moments that help to show the characters condition. The intention to reach a wider audience push the melodramatic tone, and the plot with a moment of adventure and emotional climax, which make the movie less original. Still, it's a good work for a not very ambitious project.

Given the trending negative reviews, I expected this to be a painful misfire. I am pleased to report that the reviewers have lost their minds. This is a touching portrait of a family in crisis, a neighborhood that thrives on image, and an artist stuck in a rut of non-creation. Linklater spends the first two-thirds of the movie exploring these characters and relationships, before a third act that clearly reveals the stakes. Both funny and sad (just like life), I can't wait to revisit this again.
