The atmosphere is like those late silent movies with soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, it's a talkie, but would have worked just as fine, if not better, as a silent for the dialogue wasn't all that relevant, nor good. But the shady dark alleys of Paris, the sleazy bars and lowlife slum dwellers make this an almost a poetic movie.

This tough, scrappy little pre-code melodrama from Allan Dwan is pretty violent and has a pretty racy shower scene featuring Mack. McLaglen is really good, not really recognizably the comic relief figure he'd become in later John Ford films.
