Marvelously detailed, fast-moving, well-played and attractively photographed comedy which firmly established the richest Ealing vein.

This film hit the right spots for me, with a beautiful little village and a plot that revolves around Scotch whiskey and Scottish characters (in all senses of the word). Never outright hilarious (though I did laugh out loud at the reaction to the depletion of whiskey) but made more endearing because it's not trying to be.

Another example of how most British films are as dry as dust

A fun little film full of very strange and wandering accents.

A highly spirited comedy (pun intended). It's a little mild at first but sweetens up around the "whiskey heist", let's call it, that occurs about halfway through. It's almost ethnographic in how nicely it describes a Scottish island culture at the time of WWII, and while it particularly focuses on the famous Celtic alcoholism, it also has more. The "fearies", as one character explains, "are very active around these parts".

Fun bit of dry British humour. There are some dead spots and some repetitiveness but for the most part fine light entertainment.

Beautifully filmed and utterly beguiling Ealing comedy with a terrific cast enhancing delightfully eccentric screenplay (Jean Cadell's hilariously stern Mrs Campbell is a stand-out). Film captures all the charm of low-key British comedy without ever seeming quaint or outdated. Great fun.

More dated than other Ealing comedies. It's slow and very 'English' you might say. But it has a few moments of pure joy - delivered especially by the funny and quite - for their time - flirtatious female characters.

Probably as much fun as finding 60-year-old whiskey wash up on the beach, and drinking it with an old Irish sailor whose accent only becomes more intelligible by the sixth shot. This is a simple film, with simple characters and a madcap but comfortable plot. Which is not a bad thing at all. Sometimes the well-traveled and pedestrian can still drink you under the table.

Remembered this as amazing when I was young - but was not the same on the re-watching years later.

Certainly funny in parts, especially the villager reactions to being both without and in possession of whisky. But the film does feel a bit repetitive, and the simple plot feels stretched, even at a mere 80 minutes.

entertaining movie about some innocent civil disobedience; the looting of whiskey from a stranded ship during a whisky shortage on a Scottish Island. But the plot feels too thin for even its mere 80s minute runtime.

You need to ignore the various holes in the setup, but the end is good fun.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Shows you how important whisky is for the Scottish! Amusing tale. Wouldn't have minded a little more drunken chaos, but what went down was clever.
