Meh. I like some of what it tries to do, both with its suspicion laden narrative and some of the underlying bitter commentary, but it just feels so silly for so much of the time that nothing has any impact, including the ending.

People wanting to love this for it's "noir" features are probable looking too hard. Whispering Footsteps (1943) is a rather ordinary low budget suspense flick, no different from 100s of such films from the 30s. This is more old style than the fresh film-noir phenomenon by 1943 standards. It's alright, but rather forgettable. Does have it's moments which gets you through it.
