"And just like that my virginity was gone...and so was my mom"....BAHAHAHAHAH! Jeez... I think this is the worst film I have ever seen.

Dug the vibe but found the constant use of metaphor a little overbearing.

Judging from this and AMERICAN BEAUTY, it seems the alienation of suburban middle-class housewives is destined to pretty unsympathetic representation, at least compared with the frequency of their male counterparts being represented as just sorely oppressed, often by women, often including their wives, and their resistance to such alienation, in whatever form, is so much more heroic. Even the husband in this seems to be more sympathetically represented...think about that one if you see it...

White Bird in a Blizzard isn't going to make you think too hard or care too much, but for the 90 minutes it's on-screen, it'll entertain. It'll be an uncomfortable watch, at times, but also a moderately engaging one. The small moments are better than the big picture; the acting and the dialogue make them more enjoyable than the central mystery. Shailene Woodley is great in the lead, most of the supporting cast members do the best with what they're given, and you're not going to have a dull time.

Umm, this isn't bad, and it's clear Araki is trying to do something more in line with Mysterious Skin (a movie I love), but I'm of the opinion that Mysterious Skin is much, much better. The problem here is the acting. Shailene Woodley is great, but Eva Green's overacting is unintentionally hilarious (which is sad, because this is the first "real" role I've seen her play), and something about Christopher Meloni's wooden performance makes me think he should go back to working on Law and Order.

Well made directing, much better part for Shailene Woodley she used to make. The story was less mystic I excepted. The American blizzard was bad as hell.

I actually quite liked this. More "ordinary" than I expected from Araki. Nice moods, decent acting (even though some might disagree).

So many times during the film I found myself asking, "What was writer-director Araki thinking?" From the meandering narration to the intolerable characters to the decision to have Green laugh manically so that you root for her death. Sure White Bird in a Blizzard may resonate with some, but it offers little by way of mystery, thrills or even entertainment. Its insights into the mind of a horny teenage brat may be somewhat accurate, but delivered without sympathy or poignancy. Nonsensical!

woodley's so superior to green here it's insane. other criticisms are p eyebrow-raising, with seasoned araki fans quibbling about stuff that was just as prevalent/effective in M SKIN. telegraphed plot, unrealistic dialogue and an anti-climactic resolution are all beside the point; this is subjective psychological drama mining and skirting around surpressed, vivid memories, caring about narrative surprises only as much as to allow us to inhabit/understand characters' emotional states/identities.

Each scene may pass from one to the next with the aid of the most glorious 80's music, but this isn't enough to save a well-worn and under worked Araki narrative from being shadowed by two substantial female performances.

I really don't know what to think about this one. It kept reminding me of "The Lovely Bones" for some reason, so that's a good thing. Most parts of the ending were rather predictable, though. I don't know what this film is but it surely isn't bad.

Much better movie that it looks at the first glance. It is based on the YA book of the same title, and the plot is often driven forward with literate, but not very cinematic voiceovers. The story is a family drama, set at the end of the 80's. The feeling of that era is well created. Soundtrack is good aswell - lots of top alternative songs you would expect from that time. Good acting by Meloni, Woodley is going to be A-list actress one day.

Overreaches with both the writing and acting (Green is terrible). The script is pretty poor, with stilted dialogue and metaphors scattered throughout. The dream sequences are especially half-baked and never amount to much. That being said, I really did admire the mood here. Woodley outshines the rest of the cast, but that's not saying much. Worth seeing if you're a fan of Araki. Honestly, I've never been a huge fan so take my review with that caveat in mind.

I enjoyed the way this story was told, even though it was a bit heavy handed in places.

Gregg Araki sure Arakis the shit out of this (you'll know it's his when Cocteau Twins starts playing less than two minutes in), and at it's best the film conveys a dreamy, nostalgic 1980s adolescence as beautifully as only he could (well, him and M83 i guess). The Eva Green missing mom stuff, on the other hand, feels less distinctively his own and the film sort of loses it's spark when it focuses on the story. But at it's best, it's a worthy return to his "serious" Mysterious Skin territory.

The plot is somewhat predictable, but I absolutely loved the quiet and subtle story-telling and the nostalgic 80s flair. It's nicely shot as well, I liked the dream-like look of it and the colors. Shailene Woodley is stunning as always.

Again, such a poor performance by Eva Green. She is without a doubt the worst overrated actor of both this and the previous decade. It's less of a problem to ignore her altogether in this movie than in Sin City 2 (which was utter crap just because of her), and Shailene Woodley should give Green some acting lessons on being a natural character and in doing so be much more intense. Luckily Meloni delivers and the overall atmosphere (except for the obsolete dream scenes) is quite successful.

For a no. of reasons, I was rather confident in my proclamation, of "Mysterious Skin" [2004], that GA would 'never make another movie this good, ever.' This one, wielding nearly the exact tools, format, etc., of MS, but near completely ineffectually [tho' superficially more 'mature'], makes me even more certain that GA by accident made a great, great movie, 'because of his exact qualities, regardless of good or bad,' and that my first statement was and will only continue to be correct.

Not so hard to guess what happened. Gay kid and the guy played Phil is underacting. Woodley and Green had 11 years apart, bad choice for mother-daughter roles. Terrible casting overall..
