I feel real sympathy to this man, so hardly bitten by his life and circumstances, but I do not remember myself laughing so much about this.

This movie is an icon. It represents Italy in all it's majesty. It is the Italy of those times. No other movies described Italy as this. It's characthers are still used in spoken language as common references by Italians. Try to ask some italians "who is Marcello Rubini?" (main character of "La Dolce Vita"). We don't remember, if you don't say "You know, Trevi fountain...". But try instead "ragionier Filini" or "la nuvola da impiegato". You'll see. Eternal.
