Hey, remember that movie Olympus Has Fallen, about the White House being taken by terrorists, and how it was a grim, joyless, humorless, incoherent piece of crap? Well, here's the bones of the same story, reinterpreted as a pulpy fucking blast. It's a billion times funnier, the heroes more likable, the villains more hatable, the action infinitely cleaner and more fun.

Who knew they still made 80s movies? Like Shawn of the Dead WHD successfully walks the narrow edge between spoofing a genre and being part of it. It pays homage to movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, and like a good 80s action movie it has an unreasonable well trained hero, surprisingly stupid villains and cheesy 'bad ass' catchphrases. What's not to love? Put on your Members Only Jacket, your Casio watch and travel back to a simpler time with a good action movie like they used to make them

Thanks to the smaller, more intimate scope compared to his other creations, this unauthorized Die Hard reboot is Emmerich's best film in over a decade, and possibly his best of all time. So, y'know, it's sort of okay.

I friggin' loved it! Attacking this for being derivative of 'Die Hard' is, I believe, completely beside the point. First of all, if you steal, steal from the best. Secondly, as he pays tribute to many action blockbusters, Vanderbilt's tongue is clearly placed firmly in cheek. So yes, it's a parade of clichés in the same way that, say, 'Scream' was. And that's fun. Yay for all the callbacks, too. Best of all, 'White House Down' is the most compentent and entertaining action flick since 'M:I-III'.

Pure fun and action! It has just the right fraction of parody feel to it to be high spirited and enjoyable, without getting cheap or lowbrow. For a modern day Die Hard inspired genre, it is way better than what the actual franchise has become (A Good Day to Die Hard) and it is also more entertaining than Olympus Has Fallen, if you prefer to compare it with that.

If Olympus Has Fallen rips off Die Hard, this one rips off The Rock. It's a lighter, funnier movie than Olympus, though occasionally there's some tonal dissonance between its comedy and the fact that a terrorist is holding a gun to a little girl's head and calling her a bitch. Still, of the two, I prefer this - if only for the transparent portrait of Jamie Foxx/Obama being attacked by racist Tea Party psychos and one of the McPoyles hacking the White House.

This. Was. Fucking. AWESOME. Honest, it was. It sort of blew me away, how much genuine fun I had with this movie. Sure, it's silly and junky, but it's just so enthusiastically mounted, so simultaneously huge-scaled and no-worries breezy. Great characters, great pulpy writing, entertaining and smoothy staged action set pieces; unapologetically great stuff overall. Big, broad, lunkheaded fun.

Considerably more entertaining than the dour, far too straight-laced "Olympus Has Fallen". "White House Down" is like Olympus' mentally challanged, but less inhibited brother. The opening 15 minutes are awful, the closing 15 minutes are somehow even worse, but somewhere inbetween at least we have the idiotic machinations of Roland Emmerich to keep us sort of entertained! Also, I'm not sure Roland knows how long 8 minutes is?

Ridiculous, but in the best way. The scope of 24, the intimacy of Jingle All The Way (I'm serious, don't laugh), this is a surprisingly enjoyable and genuinely compelling piece of popcorn art. I expected to be bored, and instead I was on the edge of my seat. By no means great, but by all means, entertaining. Much like The Last Stand, this was a very pleasant surprise: sometimes, action films not taking themselves too seriously can really work out.

Extremely generic action fantasy about a divorced father who misses his daughter's performance, a crime for which, as has long been established, nothing short of saving the entire world from nuclear cataclysm can provide redemption. Helped by the fact that none of the performers or filmmakers are taking it seriously. The highlight is probably when one of the bad guys declines an offer of cake from fellow bad guy James Woods on the grounds that he is diabetic. Moral of the film: "Daughters!"

A 'Die-Hardesque' action flick by the man who brought you Independence Day; I certainly enjoyed it more than Olympus has Fallen(Gerald butler notwithstanding). Good action scenes and good humor throughout; the baddies in this are not your typical villains(a mixed bag of ex-military.white supremacists & anti-gov't militia) which is a nice change of pace. If you're into action flicks, you'll enjoy this film.

What a conundrum. Not only did this movie steal most of its beats from Die Hard and The Rock, but it also had the apparent disadvantage to be the second White House based flick to do exactly that in 2013. Still, despite all this, White House Down turned out to be a proper fun over-the-top action rump.

Yes it is a full parade of cliches. But who cares once the action kicks in! I had a lot of fun watching this action flick - from start til finish. It was just bad for business that this pic was released after OHF. I am pretty sure it would have had better box office numbers and word of mouth had this pic come out earlier than that boring, no fun at all Butler & Eckhardt flick!

In skilled hands this tongue-in-cheek homage to the Die Hard franchise could have been superb fun. The completely insane sotry and setting combined with the bizarre mix of liberal and ultra-patriotic plot devices could have been fantastic. Where it falls down is that the script just isn't witty enough to create a new John McClean, and Tatum is no Bruce Willis. His mumbling charisma-free performance kills most of the film.

This is hands down the best White House-themed Die Hard ripoff I've seen all year. It's actually a better Die Hard than certain Die Hard-sequels. Profoundly dumb and unbelievably over-the-top down to its pulpy bones, but a surprisingly good time! Tatum and Foxx are solid, and the production is the best and most concise thing Emmerich has helmed to date. I had a lot more fun with this than I probably should, but who cares? Fun is fun.

The important thing is that it's pretty easy here to like and root for Tatum's character, and Foxx is pleasant company for him, and Maggie Gyllenhaal a nice (if not especially daring) choice for an ally on the outside of the White House. What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that this movie doesn't suck. In fact, it's a few notches better than it really had to be, and I appreciate that. It's kind of fun, and kind of interesting, and not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Emmerich has outdone himself this time. The plot is dumber and more patriotic than ever. I used to love it - dont know what happened. As its counterpart, 'Olympus has Fallen', it borrows A LOT from Die Hard. Tatum is an alright Bruce (his name is John Cale!), but Woods is certainly no Rickman. "STOP RUINING MY WHITE HOUSE!"

Ok, first, two cool facts about WHD: the hero is called John Cale; Emmerich might not be a John McTiernan, but he is uncompromised enough to throw one joke to remember -- the one about bringing this place to the ground in that guilty pleasure titled Independence Day, still his best. So, like any of his out-loud, world-ending pics, this is broadcasted -- or Die Hard broadcasted --, as we see TV reporters narrating explosions like TDs. At least we had some self-conscious jokes during the game.

Entertaining, stupid and fun! Just what you want from these 90s styled action flicks. But even though you can accept a lot for the sake of fun, this was too cheesy for me. Tatum is allright, but to soft for the role and Foxx is a bad joke as a president who loves his Jordans. But the worst part is the daughter who is introduced as a neglected flag twirler, which may or may not be an important skill later...

This is stupid! Plain and simple. It has obvious similarities to Olympus Has Fallen, but as Emmerich always does, he takes it too far. It has a bunch of clichés and is copying almost every single movie/tv-show I can think of, that has a "save the leader" plot. I decided to watch White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen together, and I'm quite glad I picked WHD first. Both movies are essentially Die Hard in the White House, but WHD manages to take what was fun in Die Hard and puts it on steroids. White House Down fully commits to the utter insanity of its premise and then some. WHD is also gleefully "liberal" in its politics (counter to OHF, and most action movies' "conservative" bent), which makes an interesting point for discussion and comparison.

White House Down is one of the worst films of 2013. I have no idea how Roland Emmerich is still making films. Channing Tatum is crying out to be Bruce Willis here, but he underwhelms and Jamie Foxx is better than this. The opening 30 mins are completely uneventful and the remaining 90 mins plod from one ridiculous set piece to the next. This and Olympus Has Fallen are carbon copies of one another and opinions are divided over which is best. But I think this is comfortably the weaker of the two.

Top badass moment? It’s got miniguns in it! Here we have more guilt-complex blood-letting by the Americans, as another movie strives to demonstrate how bad they know they’ve been and how corrupt their politicians are, but it’s okay as it's also got enough heroes and modern-family values to sort the problem out. But who cares, as it's well made, fun, stupid, stuff blows up and even manages to fit in one of those kids that only exist in Hollywood movies. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Emmerich's obviousness actually plays to the advantage of the film, in that there are no twists or plot developments to be disappointed by; everything just plods along without requiring much/any real thought. Tatum and Foxx portray silly characters that happen to be in tune with the film' stone. Not great, but a nice throwback to the 90s.

A bigger-budgeted PG-13 version of 'Olympus Has Fallen,' but not better by any margin. Tatum has no leading man charisma as an action star. The film does very little original or unexpected, repeating most of the beats of Olympus and 'Die Hard' of course. I was hoping for a few ideas to pop and surprise---not one to be found. I watched this back-to-back with "Olympus Has Fallen," and this was so much better for all the reasons "Olympus" was terrible. With WHD, you get to know the characters before the big event so you have sympathy for them. Even during the takeover, the characters had good rapport--even if the bad guys were 2-D caricatures--and even moments of comedy, esp. between Tatum and Foxx; both are great at drama and comedy. There were layers to the takeover, which made it more suspenseful. Awesome movie.

I like young, energetic Channing Tatum here, but I felt like he should have deserved a more talented veteran cast to work with as well a hot female co-star with talent. Like Independence Day and Godzilla it's a glorious pastiche of a sub-genre, stealing the best parts of our favourite films, and handing them to the audience with a wink and a grin. Unfortunately it takes a while to kick off - half an hour before the bad guys make their move, and then another half hour before the fun begins. Once it starts moving it's hilarious good fun, only poor Channing Tatum holds it back: mumbling all his one-liners, a distraction from the great stars supporting him in this.
