I wanted to like this movie. It's everything I'm supposed like in a movie...and it just dragged and was horrible.

This movie is so sad! That's the way family works, though. The bottom line is that it does indeed work.

It's a pessimistic, dark, and somewhat mean film, but does ultimately deliver a message that even amid the most abhorrent of conditions, a flower can bloom.

It would've made an amazing miniseries, but alas. Great story. Great acting. Felt very real. Gritty and hopeful.

I think this is great acting and a well done movie. Just, whew, it is pretty intense and not something I could see again and again.

50 only for Pfeiffer, who delivers a disturbing, raw performance, but Alison Lohman ruins everything in else.

Competently shot and there is a potentially interesting dynamic between the leads but suffers from god awful, pretentious writing and absurd levels of melodrama that can be aptly defined as "misery porn." Frankly, I'm not engaged by actors who are only allowed to show one emotion throughout the entire film and its constant use of damp color filters is such a stupid way to convey "wow, this movie is depressing!" And god, don't get me started on the moronic morals this movie preaches.

Totally missed the point of the book. Wouldn’t have been such a bad movie, but with the watering down, sanitization and normification of the source material - taking a wild briar rose of feral poetry and turning it into Beverly Hills chihuahua for geriatric grannies, it is completely unforgivable.

I liked this movie a LOT. Allison Lohman was great as Michelle Pfeiffer's artistic daughter. Michelle was great as her overbearing/husband murdering mother. Excellent drama.

Based on a novel, which got Oprah's blessing. Because of this you may predict how different sexes are handled here. Well, its not bad. Movie is enjoyable and clever. And Alison Lohman is fantastic on lead role.

i remember liking the book quite a bit actually, to my own surprise. it's not a bad adaptation but the expected one, and struggles to transcend the book's un-cinematic qualities

Stellar acting and an ample serving of interesting characters sets this film up for success, with Pfieffer's terrifyingly headstrong Ingrid and her wandering adolescent daughter Astrid (Lohman) at the forefront. Intense dialogue, poetic voiceover narration, and artistic visual montages showcase Astrid's tragic journeys to and from three foster homes and visiting her mother in jail. You're left wanting more from each compelling but brief chapter, but the drama remains delicious if not filling.
