White Reindeer

An off-kilter and often surprising dramedy exploring grief in a way few films have, anchored by an impressive performance by Anna Margaret Hollyman. It's also a pointed skewering of the Christmas season, approaching it as both the cynical marketing scheme and weirdly magical time of year that it is.

Happy to have found the perfect getting-drunk-on-shitty-wine-at-your-parents'-house-on-Christmas-Eve movie. Truly, Nasty Chocolate Teens have outdone themselves with "Slutty teen dick sucking audition"

I'm impressed by the way this satirical tragicomedy sidesteps cliches in a season that is full of just that. A healthy antidote to how gaudy and manufactured Christmas cheeriness can often become. The film reaches for hard truths and finds unexpected heart in its examination of grief but it falls just shy of achieving greatness.

This is the most unusual Christmas movie I've ever seen, and I like it. It has a sense of honesty and sadness, punctuated by the occasional good dark comedy laugh, rounding itself out with some genuine sentimentality. I had some doubts about the lead actress early on, but she managed to prove she was well up to the task of playing her role, and I'll definitely be checking out what other films she's been in. Be forewarned, though, there's likely no mass appeal here.

despite its melancholy, everybody needs to see this over the festive period, as few more bittersweet and hilarious love letters to christmas have hit the big screen in recent years.

Not without it's clunky and misguided moments (the last ten minutes in particular are kind of dumb), but overall it resembles a sort of middlebrow, Amerindie version of Morvern Callar a lot more than i would have expected, which in this case is a compliment. It actually delves into some pretty risky and interesting territory (if not unproblematically), although generally more for the sake of comedic punchlines than a better film perhaps would have. Still, it's oddly likable in it's own way.
