White Shadows in the South Seas

Mightily impressive film about 'the white man' corrupting natives in the south pacific. There are a few things that are overdone but taking into account when it was made it's an impressive critique and a very well done film with pretty visuals.

It's still in good shape, but in the twenty-first century, it's just one more melodrama better left in the silent era.

Very beautiful picture and works a treat in the right mood. The moralising element is grating, and makes the drama predictable. A more aimless and wandering fiction would have been able to explore the issues and aesthetics of the 'South Seas' more successfully, instead we have a ready structure around which these are hoisted.

Well that there's some dang pretty shootin'. It's one of those "progressive for its time" deals where some of the stuff - like natives constantly calling the protagonist a "White God" - doesn't sit well anymore, but very heartfelt and sympathetic nonetheless. Doesn't shy away from the brutal reality in the end. A truly vicious finale.

"White flesh! Never before had anything so strange been seen --" haha. There's a pretty good typhoon sequence, and the use of locations keeps it watchable in spite of everything. The sermonizing hasn't changed since the old days, but here's more blunt and therefore more fun.
