Joe E. Brown never really finds the laughs in Wide Open Faces (1938). This was the period where he had left Warner Bros to work for independent producer David L. Loew, a decision his career never recovered from. Instead this film becomes more known for being Lyda Roberti's last before she died of heart failure. Got to say it does pick itself up at the finish there with the chase and all that, but it's not one for the great laughs.
