It's a solid release with a wealth of emotionally compelling content to draw upon. Dern and Witherspoon are perfectly cast here, with the latter portraying the protagonist's struggle with death, mourning, and substance abuse adeptly. What I found to be the most tasteful in this film was its treatment of its myriad of male figures and their influence on Cheryl, whether it be as figures of violence and misogyny or, conversely, comfort and love. This has some subtle feminist themes I really love.

The best film to feature the word 'wild' in its title since Into the Wild. "What about Wild Tales, you idiot ?!" Alright, jeesh; Make that the best American film to feature the word 'wild' in its title since Into the Wild. Satisfied? "What about Beasts of the Southern Wild, asshole?!" OK, that's it, show's cancelled folks!

I liked this film the first time I watched it, when it was called "Into the Wild" Can't even come up with an original title....jeez.
Also heard that Witherspoon beat out ScarJo, J-Law and E-Wats for this role. Would rather have seen their tittaes over Reese's Pieces!

Better than I thought. It's about overcoming your past, fear, grief etc. alone in the wild. It's based on a memoir, but doesn't glamorize the flawed main character, and Reese captured her well. It's would be easy to dismiss this as a feminist piece, but it didn't shovel it's message down your throat, and actually had some sympathetic male characters. Best part for me were still the beautiful landscapes, and the atmosphere of the wild that the film captured with almost lyrical beauty.

I couldn't capture my own solo hiking 1st person experience better if I wrote it myself. ...the profanity ridden inner monologues, cursing at your surroundings out of exhaustion and/or playfulness, slapping the first marker you find after losing the trail for a bit in a half "suck it bitch!"/triumphant high five kind of way, slipping into reveries and their less pleasant equivalents, returning from either to reality with a "fuck you"... like Goofy with the mouth of a trucker

I usually have a hard time empathizing with the "privileged person goes on a journey to figure out life" trope, but in this case it is saved by a naked, earnest performance, and masterful editing which make past, present, and future coalesce into a single, dream-like quantum state. It also viscerally captures the danger that women face in a world full of men with potentially questionable intentions. A lovely, introspective film.

I don't know if I completely buy into the transformation of Cheryl Strayed (and I certainly don't buy into that last name), but it's a compelling enough journey movie all the same, and great performances and cinematography go a way to making up those shortcomings.

A fantastic film at capturing the terror of being a woman subject to patriarchy. Every single one-on-one encounter with a man is fraught with tension and fear. The film ultimately shifts focus to coming to terms with yourself, but it never loses the feminist bent. A few performances are iffy, but Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern fucking kill it, and while in some parts the voiceover is grating, at other points it is very expertly employed to further the introspective nature of the film.

Wild is an effective film about one woman's journey to self-discovery. She goes on a lengthy hike which allows her time to think on her past and figure out a way to move forward. It's compelling cinema. It's both dramatic and funny, and will hold your attention for its entire running time. It does this thanks to strong directing and a fantastic well-realized performance from Reese Witherspoon, both of which let you overlook how the film is pretty simple and a bit too convenient.

A movie that really comes close to my heart as I'm also a person that appreciates long, enduring and solo endeavors. I love slow pacing and focusing on little things. Witherspoon is great, absolutely great. Nature of the trail is breathtaking, and inspires one to go hike it one day. This movie is about memories, crosses we got to carry and redemption. Hopefully the author of the book got her redemption and found peace within herself.

Some interesting things here, but most of it doesn't make much sense. Can't ANYONE just tell a story in any sort of linear fashion any more? The only moment of clarity one comes away with is the REI product placement/commercial in the middle. All things considered, Reese Witherspoon is excellent.

I have not read the novel, but I assume that it relied heavily on introspection which was lost during the adaption to screen. I was unable to connect on an emotional level and the suggested evolution in Reese's character was absent. If anything, it felt as if the redemption had already gone by before the movie (and hike) even started. Near the end some scenes started to feel cringy and had the movie not explicitly stated the point in time the redemption was complete (yes) I might have missed it.

At some point in life we've all thought "Sod this, I'm off to the wilderness" and 'Wild' trumps the similar but superior 'Into the...' from 2007 thanks to a much more sympathetic lead character, played excellently by Witherspoon. We care about her and her journey, with well-worked flashbacks helping to fill out the story. Amazingly it avoids ramming the feminist angle down your throat, making it a piece that's accessible to all, and keeping you interested right up to the credits.

I didn't really enjoy the juxtaposition of hiking movie and emotionally messed-up person flashback movie. The past relationship and mother trauma stuff was all worth exploring, but I would rather not have been pulled in and out of it repeatedly like a yo-yo. Structurally the narrative was too jarring. Hence the lower score. Nothing wrong with hiking, Reese Witherspoon or trauma on their own.

I couldn't decide what was more wild, Reese before her hike or after her hike on the Pacific Coast Trail. This movie was just fine, not really good or bad. Reese Witherspoon had a good performance and had to do some emotionally wrought scenes, I also like Laura Dern's performance as well. Some of the edititing was good and I like the film's soundtrack. But this movie was as depressing as an empty tank of water or a boot falling down a cliff...

Lack originality of early Jean-Marc Vallée movies or the punch of Dallas Buyer Club. What he have here is a sappy feminist road movie. You'll say it's Reese Witherspoon trying to be edgy as Oscar bait, you'll say that it's occasionally a bit blunt, you'll say it's either too dark or not dark enough... somehow out of all of that I really enjoyed this and really bought into Cheryl Strayed's story of a walk to redemption. Not for everyone, but it's a real tour-de-force fro Witherspoon and a great example of a one-woman show.

This movie unfortunately failed to portray a strong female character. Even as she is taking on seemingly superhuman challenges, you pity her and she seems vulnerable. Also, I think it is a CRIME to cast Laura Dern as her mother when she is only 9 years older than Reese Witherspoon! Yet, it is not a bad movie, and 'Cheryl' is not a bad character, albeit pitiable. The scenery is gorgeous as you would expect.

Witherspoon and Dern both give emotional, genuine-feeling performances that anchor the film. Along with the dream-like atmosphere, and the musical stylings of artists like Simon and Garfunkel, they create a moving tale of self-discovery. The flashbacks do a great job of capturing internal experiences; the inner monologues, on the other hand, are more distracting.

In defiance of expectations, "Wild" is not exceedingly moralistic or cheesy. There is bad acting from Witherspoon in this. Bad, hammy, self-important acting. The whole movie's self-important, really. It treats its main character's wander through the desert as something infinitely more profound (and dangerous, and plainly unrealistic) than it likely was. Just rubbed me the wrong way, really. Movies that treat themselves as capital-A Art tend to do that.

Well, I just love Laura -- the mother-and-daughter troubling relationship; mom gets sick, dies and daughter just freaks out, starts screwing around with everyone who asks her to and using heroine; then realizes, in the hike, the beautiful and simple things her mom taught her, like enjoying the sunrise and the sunset, or just dancing in the kitchen despite how shitty her life was until then. Too bad the film looks like an undercooked Gordon Green film.

Not the opposite of the old saying that life is a journey but a destination, kind of a combination. A startlingly lonely tale about how one woman recovered from heroin addiction, sexual compulsion and a traumatic background. While the visualizations were very pretty it's a pretty shitty message to send to people with addiction. People could die from watching this film and getting stupid ideas.
