Wild Grass

2009
Drama
1h 44m
A wallet lost and found opens the door to romantic adventure for Georges and Marguerite. After examining the ID papers of its owner, it is not a simple matter for Georges to turn the red wallet he found in to the police. Nor is it that Marguerite can recuperate her wallet without being piqued with curiosity about whom it was who found it. As they navigate the social protocols of giving and acknowledging thanks, turbulence enters their otherwise quotidian lives. (imdb)

like almodóvar and ruiz, but with a bit more postmodern irony. that is, essentially an offbeat meta story about offbeat meta characters going through offbeat meta situations. not quite my jamb, occasionally a bit creepy.

Resnais refuses to build a plain, conflict-driven narrative, so he explores his characters' imagination (with Nouvelle Vague-like close-ups and that fading-black trick) to maintain the plot in a constant level of reinvention. Wild Grass works truly as a dreamy love story, with its vivid red, blue, green and purple colors invading every piece of frame. Georges and Marguerite take more than 60min to actually meet -- after letters, phone messages and a strange call. When they do, it gets crazier!

A film that is frequently surprising, but to me it doesn't seem quite right to characterise it as surreal. The characters are fascinating and original, and the filmmaking is extraordinarily inventive and alive. The theme seemed to be the relation between accidentality and desire.
