The story of Oscar Wilde, genius, poet, playwright and the First Modern Man. The self-realisation of his homosexuality caused Wilde enormous torment as he juggled marriage, fatherhood and responsibility with his obsessive love for Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed Bosie. After legal action instigated by Bosie's father, the mad Marquess of Queensberry, Wilde refused to flee the country and was sentenced to two years at hard labour by the courts of an intolerant Victorian society. Has its faults; being a little uneven in places, not particuarly well shot and perhaps not as whimsical, fun or as challanging as the great Wilde deserves. But it is engaging, and full of excellent performances, particuarly from Jude Law, Tom Wilkinson and not least Stephen Fry himself. Certainly worth a watch.

Superb evocation of the period, and a peerless cast, makes this a fascinating snapshot of Wilde's life. Fry and Law are both equally outstanding, with Fry evoking Wilde to an uncanny degree, and Law matching him as his petulant, childish lover. Witty, clever and always entertaining, while never being afraid to shy away from the darker themes of Wilde's self-destructive tendencies. That Fry was suffering with his own similar issues at the time makes his performance all the more poignant.

I love Stephen Fry and expected to love this film, but I'm afraid it didn't twist my socks one little bit. Excellent production design though.

Thoroughly enjoyable bio-pic about the life, wit, talent and tragedy of Oscar Wilde, played brilliantly by Stephen Fry. Excellent cast and script.

Phenomenal soundtrack. Great acting on the part of Fry and Law, and all the others. I wish they hadn't skipped over then end bits of Wilde's life, but at still a wonderful film.

For a film about the flamboyant Oscar Wilde, this one is rather dull. It does get better towards the end as one gets to witness the moral ambiguity that defined his life and the hypocritical and unjust but understandable condemnation he received from a people that wasn't ready for him. Unfortunately, it's a case of too little too late.

Positive spin on a life lived on the high wire.

Great cast but a bit dull. None of Wilde's wit and forgettable for me.

A really great Oscar Wilde biopic -- some absolutely amazing casting, Stephen Fry knocks it out of the ballpark as Wilde.

The perfect role for Fry. I suspect he barely had to act for this part but even so he's terrific. The film focuses mainly on Wilde's gay relationships, and the consequences of them, so don't expect too much about his creative genius. The narrative is handled well by the director and much of Wilde's infamous wit shines through.

First name, Oscar, here reduced to the role of martyr in a homosexual Passion play, the hapless plaintiff in an indictment of a benighted time. Up to and including his infamous libel trial, this is a conventional "biopic" (notwithstanding the breathtakingly unexpected opening in Colorado, with a rollicking Copland-esque musical accompaniment) on a most unconventional subject, a piece of hack-work on an artist of genius, hopping and skipping and jumping in chronological order through his life

Well done period details and some really strong performances perhaps focuses too hard on the affair.

Well I liked very much this movie although it was about homosexuals, whose I dispise the most. Acting exceeds expectations beside Fry, Law and Sheen who did it really good. There are quite few (time)holes, when you wonder what happend in between. Intimate moments are a bit too exposed, and this is quite disturbing especially if you're a bit more traditional. Soundtrack was outstanding. Overall nice insight in Wilde's life.

Well-made enough, but too many shots of guys smooching. Sorry to have such a knee-jerk reaction, but... EW!!!!

Solidly acted (Fry's portrayal is quietly emotional and Law effortlessly embodies a gorgeous asshole) and all together respectable but, especially considering it's Wilde, too tepid, too sanitized, too conservative. As with most biopics, the need to be 'respectful', mutes all artistic initiative. Read "De Profundis" instead.

Stephen Fry makes a wonderful Wilde. Pity he couldn't have starred in a better movie.
