It's amazing how such an intimate portrayal of an imploding family never felt limited or penned in. I think that's due to a score that's very delightful despite being mostly relegated to the background, and to a setting that manages to be very actualized, but never scene stealing. At the heart of this film is a character study. Mulligan and Gyllenhaal being the seasoned pros probably give the better performances, but I actually think Oxenbould steals the movie given how surprisingly good he was.

Extraordinarily intimate and painful depiction of both an imploding marriage and the devastating fallout is masterfully crafted by Dano, working from his and Kazan's considered, thoughtful screenplay which is unafraid to make both parents monsters, especially in their interactions with their son, yet miraculously makes both relatable and even worthy of empathy. Mulligan and Oxenbould are both at the top of their games, but Gyllenhaal's wounded, whingy, whiny wreck steals the film.

Genuinely awestruck by this feature debut from Dano. Wildlife is a small film, yet one that is handled with care and utmost maturity, laying bare a lot of unspoken truths about the disillusionment of marriage and the true hardships of growing into adulthood. It's been a while since I saw a film where I could really feel what the characters are going through. Sure, there are a few things I could nitpick over, but I'd say every choice he makes as both a filmmaker and co-writer feels just right.

A great debut for Dano, with the best performance from Mulligan in years - she’s almost terrifying at times. Small and slow in a way that’ll lead to it being called boring by many, but I found it very intense.

A movie that truly feels like it was made by someone who lived through this exact scenario. A totally unromanticized view of a failed marriage in its total pathetic glory. Mulligan just nails her part.

The kind of movie where the characters’ actions or lack of actions infuriate you, but you buy every second of it. It may seem simply the product of the actors - and Mulligan, Gyllenhaal, Oxenbould, and Camp are all fantastic. Deliberate and lived in. But none of this is possible without the nearly unnoticeable aesthetic choices by Dano and his cinematographer. The exteriors in particular are powerful - viewing characters in their domestic isolation. Excellent debut from Dano.

Beautifully shot and a fantastic central performance by Mulligan. The script and Gyllenhaal's performance leave something to be desired.

Just seemed to be missing that connection that had any real impact.

Mulligan's wannabe-traumatized mid-life crisis is compelling. She's a cunt - a militant, arrogant, selfish, very easy to dislike character. She's also flawless in her performance. And on that level she's matched by Oxenbould, thrust into the role of the only functioning adult in his life. And then Gyllenhaal returns and it's game on. Their family dynamic is like the world's most well-performed car crash; it's horrible but you can't look away. Even without my Gyllenhaal bias, this is tremendous.

A bit too moralizing when it depicts a marriage falling apart, but sometimes engrossing and engaging when it shows a family dying from the inside through the eyes of a lonesome teenager. Actor-driven, slightly psychological slice-of-life drama that indicates Dano could direct some really good stuff anytime soon.

It's Ed Oxenbould's movie, and he's good in it.

Orta direk aile bunalımları. İşsiz kalan baba, hem evi idare edip, iş bulan 1 anne ve çaresiz 1 erkek çocuğun etrafında dönen 1 aile filmi. Oyuncuların abartısız iyi oynadığı, senaryonun tıkır tıkır işlediği, sıkmadan izlettiren 1 yapım. Paul Dano çok yetenekli. Filmin sonunda, ayrılsak da beraberiz denmiş. Bir fotoğraf çekinebilir miyiz?

An intimate portrait of a family on the brink of separation. The way that the characters try to hold onto what they lost, redefine themselves or ignore their problems altogether feels very believable. A strong debut from Paul Dano.

Wonderful. Mulligan is brilliant, Oxenbould is great, the script is fantastic, Paul Dano makes a hell of a debut behind the camera. Just one of those little movies which does just about everything perfectly. Works especially well if you've lived in a small town.

nice acting, mediocre story referring to the decay of american dream: "I feel like I need to wake up, but I don't know what from, or to"

"I feel like I need to wake up, but I don't know what from-or to."

This movie takes a very direct and no-frills approach in showing how a marriage falls apart - which can make the movie a bit dull but sincere at the same time.

Slow moving drama as is typical of Criterion films. Not the most exciting story in the world, in fact, it was a rather sad and depressing story of a young teenager watching his mother further grow apart from his father, who is away fighting a forest fire. Acting was good all around and some neat mountain shots add to the experience. If A24 and Criterion are smart, they'll get Oxenbould in their movies as he has great experience and a presence similar to Lucas Hedges.

Well shot and acted. Small scope as it is very focused on three characters and only two others are really even in more than one brief scene. It's good, but it is just pretty somber so not sure I'll ever want to revisit.

This film paints a very realistic portrayal of a family. The three actors playing the family all do excellent work here. The script is good, it deals with things realistically. Overall I would recommend this film.

Beautifully made, from haunting score to poignant cinematography, impeccable turns to superb script that always knows when to talk and when to not, with a great three-act story shifting through a poor kid lens the focus from volatile dad to selfish mom to post-fire aftermath (the lack of repercussions for the porch incident is the only flaw here). Its picture-near-perfection actually holds it back a bit though; the aching drama of the narrative could've benefited from a bit more grit and shake.
