Some people may write this off as a typical or average crime thriller, but I thought it was a pretty dang good. Jeremy Renner is very convincing as the hunter and Elizabeth Olson as an FBI agent in an unfamiliar environment. Taylor Sheridan's writing and directing really do somehow make you feel like you're at the reservation with them. I personally felt kind of cold just watching it! Maybe that was just me. Either way, this was a pretty solid movie with great leads. Worth a watch.

Sheridan continues to impress with his low-key, yet impactful storytelling. However, more as a writer than a director. There are some spotty choices in tone and delivery, and some dialog reminded me of that forced tough-guy act i disliked in sicario. And does renner pull that much of an audience, that they couldn't just have gone all the way with a native american protagonist? Would've loved zahn mcclarnon here.

Winter's Bone or High Water. I like everything up until they filled you in. I don't need filling in. Not on everyone's backstory when a team of villains is being assembled. Not when a character says, "Many Bothams died to get us this information." Not when an old director wants to tread haphazardly over his established classic. (Not you, George Miller. You're cool.) I'm looking at you, Ridley Scott. And not when a series really just wants to reboot, X-men, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, etc.

Wind River is a great movie. It's exciting, emotionally resonant, thematically deep, and almost relentlessly bleak. It's not a "fun" watch, but fantastic cinema doesn't have to be fun. What we have here is a screenwriter being allowed to personally deliver his vision to audiences, and while there are a couple of small missteps along the way, he does an excellent job at doing so. Wind River is nearly a must-see, and it's a movie I appreciate a great deal.

This is my favorite Jeremy Renner movie. He effectively plays the unpretentious seasoned Fish and Game hunter doggedly hunting a killer. Elizabeth Olsen was also awesome in her role. The story is heavy but handled quite well. Acting was superb throughout. Beautiful scenery and excellent yet simple story. The director blundered by showing people improperly reacting to the impact of being shot, but was otherwise good.

Unlike Sheridan's previous efforts, Wind River doesn't seem to primarily thrive on its political agenda, instead placing greater emphasis on character and narrative - an intimate and tightly wrought whodunit that builds to a surprisingly tense climax. Consequently, the occasional stabs at social relevance can't help but feel heavy-handed - especially when considering the ill-advised casting of the lead roles - a minor complaint about an otherwise pretty sweet crime film.

Completely solid writing again from Sheridan, who is quietly becoming one of the better writers in the industry in my eyes. Slow but not boring, violence worked when it had to. Has something to say and while I think that sometimes gets lost, it does stick to its themes well. I don't think it's substantial because a better director would bring the writing to life more (like in Sicario), but it's a good directorial debut for sure with a great sense for atmosphere and understanding of the Western.

Hot off of Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan delivers one of the most real and visceral pieces of film I have ever seen. I sat in silence with my friends for hours after the movie ended, just contemplating how very real the events of this movie are, and how so many just sit idly by and choose to ignore it.

You get the feeling Jeremy Renner's character was originally written to be Native American because the fact he's white makes no sense. Regardless of that I'm pretty sure this is Renner's best performance in a movie. Sheridan has proven he can write, and now direct, tense and suspenseful scenes. Overall another impressive movie from him and he's building a solid reputation for himself, definitely checking out whatever he makes next.

Wind River doesn’t step outside the traditional sandbox of thrillers, but Taylor Sheridan’s tone and story structure really propels this dark story in a really strong light. There is a strong sense of mental trauma and toll, as well as a bit of social commentary on some real world issues that are lightly unnoticed. The small and simple setting just makes for a narratively tighter film that really intensify the characters and their actions, and in turn, the whole arch. Heavily recommend.

Lead by a poweful cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal (in the films most crucial scene and he nails it) Wind River is as realistic as a film could get. Set on a cold and dreary reservation Wind River is not afraid to point out the faults within the system and give us a very eye opening look at every day life. As the film progresses we see the darker side of those who have found themselves stuck in the ongoing Canyons through out the mountains of Wyoming.

"Wind River" is more of a social critique wrapped up in thriller and mystery accessible to a wide range of audience thanks to contemporary, and popular, main cast led by Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. These two actor refuse to be recognized only for their famous superhero role in the Avengers. Renner is unapologetic portraying a man desperate to redeem himself, while Olsen is poignantly and solidly dramatic playing a tough, no-nonsense FBI agent. This dramatic thriller is Simply excellent

As Taylor Sheridan closes his American Frontier Trilogy, he continues to show how he excels at telling a story. While the stakes are small and the tension is often high, Sheridan allows time for her characters to breath and mourn. From the Mexican drug trade, to Anglo poverty, and now the hostility and travesty of life on a reservation; Sheridan has thrived in the modern Western.

This is just a really solid murder mystery/thriller. In some ways, there's not a lot unique about it, but in others, it's exceptional. The direction is really nice, and they were able to create a lot of unexpected moments. The brutal setting was also integral to the movie, creating beautiful landscapes and feeling like a character in and of itself. I really enjoyed Elizabeth Olsen's performance - she had a real Clarice Starling vibe. It's definitely another win for Sheridan

This film is very good, but for me, it was a little uneven. The plot is as devastating as the harsh conditions that the story is set in. The performances are great all around and draw the required emotional responses. The film though is a bit of a slow burn, and the finale kind of sneaks up on you. Which is not necessary a bad thing, but it does feel like it takes the intended impact away.

Standard crime/police procedural attempts a consideration of greater societal issues, but is better if considered as a more superficial genre entry, especially in Sheridan’s portrait of Renner’s lost and damaged soul (Renner gives a stand-out performance as well). It’s a minor shame that Olsen’s Starling-like FBI agent is given little to do after some terrific opening scenes, but the chilly cinematography, and a very evocative sense of setting and place, lift this to a cut above average.

Of course I have my reservations about the ending with how NDN's are treated with how the white characters made off, but I'd be lying if I didn't think this was a beautifully made, tense thriller. Sheridan clearly knows what he's doing. They try to take down the white saviourness of the character ("what's all this we shit"),but it's never pushed further than a surface level moment and lots of whites prob were like what is the big deal about this white guy just trying to help? Why not cast an NDN

A tonally perfect low-key homicide thriller which pairs up a classic duo, in Elizabeth Olsen's naive but likeable FBI agent and Jeremy Renner's stone cold good guy tracker. It plays out similar to a Western and all the action is saved for the end. Simplicity of story is not a problem. There is enough character stuff to balance it out. The wintry setting is milked beautifully to create just the right atmosphere. Would gladly see it again.

After loving "H or HW" I was really hoping for a bit more from this film. The opening scenes, acting and script set expectations soaring, (so nice to see affection between two leads rather than romance!) with the main characters stoic, tough, but decently human. However the story flattered to deceive, decending into a pretty ridiculous shoot-out without the main theme of the plot (ie: the inhuman treatment of native american women ) being explored. Still worth seeing, but dont expect too much.

While thrilling, its want to be both a genre film and a socio-political commentary while casting white protagonists, sidelining Native actors and killing them with little care, and its wading into some misogyny is troubling. Leaving a purposefully incapable female protagonist aside, the unnecessary graphic rape of a Native woman, and the lack or representation of Native women in general, is incredibly troubling. For a movie that aims to help, it is brimming with egregious tokenism and racism.
