Winged Migration

Winged Migration

2001
Documentary
1h 29m
The cameras of Jacques Perrin fly with migratory birds: geese, storks, cranes. The film begins with spring in North America and the migration to the Arctic; the flight is a community event for each species. Once in the Arctic, it's family time: courtship, nests, eggs, fledglings, and first flight. Chicks must soon fly south. Bad weather, hunters, and pollution take their toll. Then, the cameras go south of the Equator; Antarctica is the summer destination... (imdb)

Watching birds fly around is really freaking cool for an hour, maybe, but this sucker stretches it out way too long.

After about 50 breathtaking shots of birds flying over gorgeous landscapes, you start to crave some variety. There are interesting moments, but they're too few and far between. Great cinematography, but ultimately kinda pointless.

Some nice photography of flying birds. After the initial amazement and question "How the hell did they film that?" wears off, the film gets pretty pointless. I didn't like the 'medieval' folk soundtrack, and that is a big portion of a movie, since there are only a few lines of narration. For me this film falls behind Microcosmos and March of the Penguins.

I grew watching a lot of PBS nature programs and the Wild Kingdom and despite the comments from people that this was "different", I disagree. Yes, there were some incredible shots, but if you've seen a lot of nature docs, I don't think this is really worth seeing.

Yep - it's just birds. But dang if it isn't some of the most mesmerizing and beautiful imagery you could ever imagine. As someone who is not that into birds, I was amazed at how much I loved watching this movie. I regret not seeing this in a theater.

As an actually informative documentary, it's a bust. The narration is sparse and not very engaging, and the film goes from bird to bird with seemingly little cohesion. As a beautiful series of images of birds, however, it excels. So many wonderful shots, both in content and in impressive technique that makes you wonder "how did they shoot that?" In the end screensaver docs aren't my favourite thing, but I do enjoy them once in a while, especially when done as well as this.

Lots of beautiful and impressive shots of birds. But also some staged stuff. Oh, and then you learn they were able to get this close to the birds by imprinting themselves on them at birth. So now all authenticity in this film is questionable. Are these even natural birds doing natural bird things? I don't care enough to find out.

Amazing photography, really amazing. One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen from a purely cinematographic perspective.

Inspiring, provocative, and technically extraordinary footage nearly spoiled by a repetitive distracting new-age/faux-world-music soundtrack, and less informative voice-over than surely would have been possible.

You will like this only if you are a bird-lover. Frankly nothing in it for the casual movie-goer.

Visually one of the most striking movies I've ever seen. As a documentary, it's totally relaxing and engrossing. I should also mention I'm a total bird-lover, so this has an extra appeal for me. (I admit I cracked up at the juxtaposition of the Bald Eagle glaring at the Canada Geese)

This is probably most beautiful documentary ever made. Technically superb and presented from birds-eye view. Totally unique experience.

This is to movies what screen savers are to computers. I've considered many times picking this up just to have on in the background. Some of the tracking shots are incredible whether they are high in the air or just off the ground. Bonus marks for the great soundtrack by Bruno Coulais.
