Winter Passing

Harris gets top billing, but this movie belongs to Deschanel, who is outstanding. The film follows her journey as she struggles to reconnect with a father she barely knew, and must decide if she'll exploit him for a big pay-day. It's well-acted, and Ferrell is great in a rather subdued role that's touching and funny without ever being loud. Things get a bit rushed in the final act, as Rapp pushes the movie to the finish line, dodging a bit of slow set-up stuff that made the opening work so well.

Zooey Deschanel's character was so thoroughly unlikeable and uninteresting that I couldn't watch this movie past the first 30 minutes or so. Simply dreadful.

Zooey didn't like her parents and now it's our problem. The danger with portraying despondent characters is creating a despondent audience. I really only watched this for Zooey. The movie itself is a bit wanky and depressing, and in love with its own indie cleverness. Also, Ed Harris's wig is ridiculous.

The anatomy of a hipster. Trust me I initially meant it in the most unfavorable light. But the protagonist is so mordant and yet sentimentally alluring that you can't help but get sucked into this film's quirky gloom.

I always love Zoey Deschanel and she is good in this. This movie is full of dysfunctional people. Just odd enough to be interesting, but the story is not very engaging, and sometimes rather pathetic. Amelia Warner was also good. Thankfully Will Farrell was playing a subdued role, not very funny but at least he was not annoying. It's hard to recommend this movie very highly, but I think worth watching.

As depressing as some may find 'Winter Passing' to be, Deschanel at least moves it past the dreadful plateau, to a place of minor charm and subtle humor. As an actress, she is yet to fail. Will Ferrell adds an awkward yet rather hysterical bit to the whole thing, and it was nice seeing him change it up a bit. As a whole, 'Winter Passing' isn't for everyone, but I still recommend it for its quiet, albeit positive attributes.

Winter Passing is a good movie filled with deep characters, unfortunate situations and enough comedy to stop the melancholic tone from being overbearing. Its first act drags on for too long, and the supporting cast isn't as strong as you would hope, but Zooey Deschanel is so good in the lead role that she carries the film. The plot is fairly routine, which isn't in the movie's favor, but I appreciated it in large part because of the depth of the characters and Deschanel's performance.

Tender, sad, lovely. Terrific acting.

I wish I would know how to describe this kind of movies,just that I could find more.

Will Ferrell ruined this already mediocre movie. Zooey Deschanel made it so I still wanted to stare at the screen.

One of my very favorite movies. Best acting and a perfectly crafted atmosphere. Masterpiece of film.

Winter passing is a pretty simple movie - a basic coming of age story with cliche charachters and obvious resolution. Sounds pretty bad, but it actually isn't. The mood of this movie is absolutely great - you don't even need to listen to what the people are saying, you kind of sink into it and feel it. Very good atmosphere with very good music. But the best part of the movie is the amazing performance by Zooey Deschanel. This is 100% her movie and she does wonders with the poor script.

i really tried to like this movie... excellent Deschanel, good music, i wanted to be captured in the atmosphere but wasn't, the story being too predictable and lacking in truly interesting things to say.

This movie doesn't deserve the low score's it's received. Definitely decent outside of the scenes that take place in New York, & Ed Harris' character is memorable & pleasant.

Very good.

Zooey Deschanel saves this film, which at times was poorly written and so predictable. Yet still somewhere admist the mix of predictability lies the character of Reese Holdin who is struggling with what has happened in her life. She returns home in order to get the letters her parents wrote to each other, but what she finds is her aging father down on his luck, and living with a struggling musician and a former student.

I couldn't get past the kitten murder, so if this movie redeemed itself after that point I'll never know.

The film is better than I thought, although not a great movie. It no has a great story, but worth the interesting interaction between the characters and a good performance of Zooey Deschanel.
