Winter's Child

A criança do inverno estreava há 35 anos no Festival de Berlin. Quando li a sinopse desse filme pensei se eu realmente queria encerrar a noite com um filme sobre um macho chato do caralho, daí comecei a ver e descobri que o Paulo Branco era o produtor, daí me arrependi ainda mais. O que me levou a terminar foi pensar que era o segundo longa do Assayas e que tinha Gerard Blain no elenco. Enfim, agora estou depressiva por conta dessa gente horrível. YTS.

Viewed January 6, 2022. Olivier Assayas' second feature has the same heavy, doom-laden feel as his debut Disorder, but where that film seemed inert and sort of empty, Winter's Child is much more compelling in its dour dramatics. Assayas creates some effective tension just through his laser-sharp focus on his actor's faces - the way his camera winds its way around them to create a fluid sense of motion, often stopping cold to emphasize a particularly jarring image.

Assayas' second movie is very similar to his debut in that both show the falling out of people and relationships without showing the heydays first. But while in the debut despite never seeing those good times I did care about the characters in this one I didn't, making this second movie much less a success. This is because inn Désordre the characters feel much more as well-rounded characters, while in this they feel like one note embodiment of ideas. It's also a much bleaker film.
