Without Warning

The main draws here are Palance and Landau trying to out-crazy each other. The alien's reveal in the third act is also pretty good, but the whole affair never rises above basic competence.

Finishing out an unplanned two day/two terrible Ralph Meeker movies event (how awesome is my life?), Without Warning is hailed as a precursor to Predator, which is kind of like saying a tomato is a precursor to lasagna. The performances by the unknowns is embarrassing at best, and the performances by the tried and true old timers is far worse. Landau and Palance specifically seem locked in some sort of duel for who can have the worst hairdo. To their eternal credit, there's no clear winner.

There's a game of one-upsmanship between Palance and Landau, each going harder than the last, and there's some nice cinematography by the underrated Dean Cundey, John Carpenter's go-to guy in the '80s. When they reveal the monster at the end, it's so abrupt and well-shot that it actually holds some shock today. A goofy little thing, but one that gets better as it goes and blossoms into a solid 20 minutes or so of good horror.

Clearing my Wishlist - Pt. 9: Normally you'd think a movie featuring horny college kids, throwing flesh-stars, a rape van, Jack Palance's sagging jowl, and a troop of boy scouts would be the best thing next to Jack Palance's sagging jowl. Despite the poster claiming otherwise, it's pretty clear that the alien does not prey on human fear. It just preys on humans who are afraid, using an endless supply of throwing flesh-stars to annoy hillbillies only trying to enjoy their domestic swill in peace.

I've seen a good number of 80's b-horror movies, enough to know that "Without Warning" is light years ahead of the pack. Even with the hilarious alien design and retardedly thin plot, I can think of a number of 80's low budget movies that I'd recommend after this one, if you really want to fully explore shitty horror movies from the 80's--I'm looking at you Mr. Argento. If you're a schlock connoisseur, this may be a surprise.

Very low budget sci-fi horror, reminiscent of and predating Predator (played by the same "man in the suit"). It feels like a home movie, although some of the practical FX are decent considering. It feels very much like an amatuer work, but the script isn't bad and the camera is occasionally used to good effect. It's often laughable, but also pretty enjoyable. Recommended for fans of so-bad-it's-good romps and as an entertaining curiosity piece. Oh, and Jack Palance. He does alright.

Decent enough alien flick where the evil alien hunts people for sport. They could have cut Landau from the movie, Palace does a fine job of carrying the picture though. Half of this feels as if they started to make a slasher movie then changed their minds.

Well shot exploitation fodder. Some of it's unintentionally funny, but it's very entertaining on the whole, with a slew of recognizable veteran actors. Only Palance is given much to do, and he's generally effective.

Early slasher full of famous b-movie faces that obviously had an influence on 1987's "Predator". Some good locations and great photography by Dean Cundey make this watchable.

Worth a watch for nostalgia or the VHS era.

Pretty decent killer alien on the loose movie. Jack Palance and Martin Landau lend it a little bit of class.
