Hana falls in love with a mysterious man, but he has a confession to make: he is a descendent of an ancient tribe of wolfmen, who have the ability to alternate between human and wolf form. Hana does not bat an eye, and the two begin a romance that produces two children, Yuki and Ame. A tragedy leaves Hana to care for her two children as best as she can, kids who behave more like pets than people. As Yuki and Ame grow older, they must also grapple with who they are and what they want to be. (LA Eiga Fest)

On its face, this is a light and whimsical look at the ups and downs of a very unusual family, but under the surface lurk some profound themes such as destiny vs. free will and how each generation connects to those before and after it. Gorgeous animation.

A decent animated fantasy where the core conflict might be shrouded by otherworldly magic, but is just a veiled universal struggle for all parents. It's a struggle to let your children grow up into their own people. But my problem with it is when it's framed by choosing to live life as either a human or a wolf. What kind of parent would allow their underage kid to live as an animal in the wild at risk of easily being killed by humans or succumbing to starvation or the elements?

Another stunning addition to Hosoda's resume, Wolf Children is a bright, heartfelt, and surprisingly mature film that has a cast of engaging characters and several sequences that stand as some of the most stunning works of animation in the last decade. Another fine film from Hosoda, and another reminder that now that Miyazaki has retired he may be the most interesting voice remaining in all of Japanese animation.

Ahhhhh... my goodness. Good characters, good people, good societies, strength in expressing how every part of us and every moment of our lives matters. Augh.

Quite a lovely story about a mother struggling to raise her children alone while fostering their sense of individuality & acceptance. As with TGWLTT Hosoda uses a peculiar fantasy device as a doorway into complex emotions, nuanced social dynamics & weighty philosophical themes, all while maintaining a sense of gentle lightness. In fact the drama was so strong in parts that I questioned the whole need for such a device & it did kinda seem in an awkward bind between a kid movie & an adult movie.

I'm so impressed. One of the best anime movies I have seen so far. The scenery is spectacular, beautiful and peaceful. A lovely story and a very refreshing movie.

very easy to like a film this sweet, tender and heartfelt, which is kind of the problem; it prefers to squeeze the absolute maximum sentiment out of a tired old formula rather than doing anything unexpected, and it's hard to connect to the thorny dilemmas of the story when the filmmaking is so refined and risk-free. if this one's made for humans, maybe there's a little too much wolf in me.

This was a nice movie, though it really went on for far too long in my opinion, and the melodrama got to be too much to handle at points.

This anime film was so lovely. It's full of sweet and cute and sad moments. I was smiling for the majority of the movie, for sure. The animation was really nice, too. You got a real feel for each setting. I highly recommend it if you're into this kind of thing.

[CBFF 2019] Still his opus 7 years later. The most deeply personal work from the the most deeply personal living director.

On a technical level Mamoru Hosoda's films are always a marvel. A mature film with hints of Miyazaki and a breezy lighthearted story filled with moments of depth. The voice acting was wonderfully done and the soundtrack helped convey the emotions well. But as with the other Mamoru Hosoda films I've seen I was left feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Cute family movie about a single mother raising two children, with occasional bouts of werewolfery. So far, so random. But the movie has a very warm heart, and once it settles into its stride of building an independent life in the countryside (a constant theme in Japanese millennial cinema) it could go peacefully on for years. The main story flaw is that the wolf gene is never fully utilised as a plot driver. Hence, the ending is left late and resolved hurriedly. Animation at its most beautiful.

Very lovely heart warming film, far better than most of the others of it's type out there. The old school animation and story are the true heart of this light family friendly movie. Really interesting how the characters were developed and grown throughout the ordeal.

Pretty much all of Mamoru Hosoda's work that I've seen is ingenious. It all has depth, heart, and imagination to rival (and even at times surpass) the very best of Miyazaki. He's an absolute master of his craft, and this movie exemplifies everything he's so good at. It might be a little sappy for some, but I fell for it hard.

It's not good when the furry sex scene is the highlight of the movie. The beginning goes at a lightning pace before slogging the rest of the way with no real plot or characters that leave any impact. The characters clash with the backgrounds as if two different directors oversaw both parts. The ending is beyond awful and is just a fuck you to the characters and the viewers. I didn't even cry from boredom. I just wasted 2, very long, hours.

[Spoiler] Once Happy the Emo Wolf dies, we get a touching and very sweet movie about a mother and her struggles to raise her children. There are several supurbly effective scenes and some of the animation is very special indeed with some nice musical choices. The story went in a different direction to what I was expecting also, which was good; although this film does almost collapse under the weight of its own melodrama towards the end. It really is very likable though.

I felt confused. I felt appalled at the beginning, with the furry and melodramatic, and then the movie turned cute. I sort of liked it, to be honest, but at times not.

Amazing character arcs and developments.. Stunning visuals. Very unique story told in very cliche theme.. Its kinda suprising.. Only low moments/points is comes from predictibility and the end which is kinda altered by pre-end scenes. The End Scene kinda lost its effect due to pre-end scenes (most hype moments of the movie). But besides these features.. I think movie was nearly perfect. has great musics and ost album too.

Only occasionally saccharine, 'Wolf Children' is a deeply touching coming of age story told with beautiful animation and an appropriately keen attention to detail, both in its visual and spoken storytelling. Presented as a fairy tale, and just as magical.

The film treads a very fine line between mawkish and genuinely affecting, and I can completely understand the people for whom it falls into the former camp, but the concreteness and the sobriety of execution of most of its moments (as well as its occasional visual flair) made it really work for me.

The first hour and change or so of the movie I thought was extremely lovely. A lot of really well-done visual storytelling with montages of the relationships, raising the kids, fixing up the house, planting the farm, etc. I was a bit iffy on the ending largely turning around this big out of nowhere rainstorm though.

One of the things that consistently dazzles me about Japanese animation (besides their stunningly detailed and truly beautiful animation), is how much deep, thematic resonance they can mine out of really slight sounding premises. Mamoru Hosoda creates a really beautifully complex film out of trying to raise a couple of wolf children.
