We live in a new era where the concept of rescuing a damsel in distress in fiction is considered clichéd and frowned upon. Modern writers are challenged to come up with something else worthwhile for protagonists to rescue. One suitable substitute is a priceless work of art. In this movie, an elderly woman teams up with a lawyer to try and retrieve a painting of her aunt that was wrongfully taken from her family. See? They want to rescue a painting of a woman. That's completely different.

Simple story to this movie for me -- didn't hate it, but found myself tremendously uninterested. Almost bored. Helen Mirren is a tremendously-skilled actress (obviously), Ryan Reynolds is impossibly pretty (obviously), and the movie is shot pretty beautifully... but it doesn't add up to an entertaining or captivating whole. Things happen, then more things happen, then there's emotion, then there's resolution. If this was trying to be "Argo" quality, it didn't get there. Just fell flat with me.

All contemporary scenes are awful, Helen Mirren included. The rest is okay.

Competently shot, well acted, with a bit of emotion near the end. But none of that matters because it's so boring. I fell asleep briefly, I woke up and things were still going on that I couldn't possibly care about. The Nazi parts were about what you'd expect, though I didn't care for the washed out colours (wasn't a necessary stylistic choice for the flashbacks). Agreed with Matthew Parkinson that it would have worked better as a documentary.

OK, somewhat manipulative, but there's a lot else that's worth the trip. If you're not interested in history, or what they mean by not repeating it, don't bother. Certainly many whine about too many Holocaust movies, but then Europe seems like it's wanting to dive back into that pool.
Heil Hitler.

One of the most incredible, triumphant stories I've ever heard of. Unfortunately, the only incredible thing about the production itself is Helen Mirren. The film never manages to hit the proper mix of tragedy and comedy, and Ryan Reynolds, like many other parts of the movie, is remarkably mediocre.

A solid, interesting story but there is nothing special in the telling. Although the transitions between the present and past memories were well done.

Philomena mk. II, but I found much to enjoy here anyway. A pleasant, warm blend of odd-couple comedy and courtroom thriller. Simon Curtis draws on the extremely compelling real-life material - a Jewish refugee takes on the Austrian government in a bid to retrieve familial artwork - to present a film sure to delight the audience it's targeting.

Another endearing film about a story that should not be forgotten. People should look at Woman In Gold more like a cultural and social movie from which anyone can draw a lesson or two. I am a firm believer that nobody should ever forget what happened during both World Wars, and what we are still doing to each other today. Woman In Gold only contributes to that persuasion. 68/100.

It's an incredible story with an amazing background, and Helen Mirren kills it. However, Reynolds brings the film down a bit. Overall fantastic.

I found this to be a very nice, attention-holding, dramatic, and well-acted movie about legal maneuvering to get restitution for Nazi wrongdoing. I think it is good that this movie was made, to help people remember, but I don't think this movie was fantastic and Ryan Reynolds seemed a bit of a goofball.

Woman in Gold (2015) is a pleasing drama. Both Helen Mirren & Ryan Reynolds do their parts straight forward and they are even fairly honest about events. A little action added as it relates to the escape from Nazi Austria, but otherwise there wasn't too much 'Hollywood' added. Everything fairly up-beat and the time that dwells in the past is elegantly done. Became much more enjoyable then I'd expected. Perfectly acceptable film from Simon Curtis.

Not only is this John Grisham-esque courtroom drama an engaging David-vs.-Goliath tale, its poignant and painful recollection of the Holocaust feels like an important reminder at a very critical point in our history, a time when violent anti-Semitism is again on the rise across Europe. And Woman in Gold manages to make its hard-hitting points without delving into the kind of hard-core content that many other films chronicling European Jews' tragic plight under Hitler's murderous Third Reich deli

Oftentimes feels like a by-the-numbers retread, but Mirren is always worth watching and there's enough different elements here to keep you entertained.

A well told story and a beautiful movie. It was good to see Ryan Reynolds do something different. Nice to for Katie Holmes to have a small part that wasn't advertised.
