Great effects for the most part, but there's no reason for this to be 3 hours long. The American release was 90 minutes long and I'd imagine it didn't lose much in the editing process. Fritz Rasp does show off his skills of being an evil bastard, though.

This thing is almost 3 hours long and it feels like it but it also entertains the entire time. Beautifully shot, well acted for the time and grounded by "real" science.

Clearly dated and overlong, but it's an innovative and fascinating sci-fi adventure that expresses a romantic feeling of exploration and discovery that is impossible to replicate or even fathom today. Lang/Oberth sneak in a critique about how greed and capital drive men to seek riches beyond the ends of the Earth, but the real joys are found in its elegant retro-futuristic set design, its reverent nods to 19 century fiction (i.e. Verne) and its remarkable lighting and camera work.

It's Lang so it's obviously perfectly crafted with so much attention to detail that makes it a marvel that it actually got made in 1929. But honestly kinda dull

Is this the first instance of hard science fiction on film? Its technological prescience is remarkable, as is the seriousness with which Lang treats the subject matter. The special effects are still a blast to watch, and its got a bit of thriller intrigue, but the ball is unfortunately dropped in the last act, which finally occurs on the moon. The scientific plausibility becomes dated (to be fair, accurate speculation of its time), and it devolves into some action adventure tropes.

The first part is awesome (and clearly an inspiration for people the Gerry & silvia Anderson, co-creators of the Thunderbirds), but once they land on the moon, this film badly dates. We LOVE the superspy with the wierd nazi like fringe though... Good stuff Toe knee :-)

With a title like this you'd hope for an imaginative sci-fi romp. Instead you get a ho-hum adventure/thriller. It's a full two hours before they even get to the moon, and very little is made of it. So much time is wasted on bits of intrigue that don't matter to an audience that wants to see what's on the MOTHERFUCKING MOON. When the story indulges in some actual sci-fi, it's a hoot. Too bad it takes a backseat to so many less inspiring subplots. Wonderful visuals and special effects, though.

even with much overextended and unnecessary drama, ranging from evil capitalists to a stowaway kid, this still belongs to the lineage of films that indulge in the human ambition to explore the outer limits. lang makes an effort to include a fair amount of detail for 1929, and directs with incredible visual flair. if one was to journey from A TRIP TO THE MOON to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, this would surely be an intermediary destination.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

a thrilling, melodramatic, pulpy second half that, unfortunately, has to be reached by way of slogging through a ponderous first half -- 80 minutes of pure setup taking place really in only 2 sets. a crippled classic, in a sense.

Awesome visuals, and a decent story but it was hard to follow and not interesting throughout. Didn't capture me.

Not bad, but it takes a long time before it gets really moving. Some of the effects are pretty cool, though obviously pretty dated.

This film is often cited as the first occurrence of the "countdown to zero" before a rocket launch (Wikipedia). IMHO this may be the very first film that uses the cliche of showing the woman leaving bus or plane that she was meant to board just in the next scene.
