A bit low-key and Ann Sheridan's motivations are too cloudy. But this movie has a lot going for it. Sheridan gives a terrific, brassy performance and her character transformation is wholly believable. I also really enjoyed Robert Keith. The dialogue is witty as heck, some very amusing banter going on. The tension is sparse, but it all pays off in an amazing, frenzied climax set in an amusement park. Comedy and noir don't often blend together well, but Foster pulls it off nicely.

Even an early reveal of the killer doesn't take away the tension of this movie. As Frank's wife falls back in love with him during her hunt for clues, I started to care about what would happen to Frank. There we go: tension, leading to the kind of grotesquely suspenseful ending that can only happen at an amusement park.

This was excellent. Some noirs just have that special something, the dialogue, the right actors, the perfect pacing, it's hard to pinpoint but this one definitely has it. Ann Sheridan is great as the lead, and O'Keefe almost as good as the reporter tailing her, but Robert Keith as the cop steals every scene he's in, balancing the jaded tone with a touch of comedy. The plot twists and turns and we get a two for one of psychological study and mystery chasing and the film delivers in every aspect.

Wow, a comedy noir that works! Sheridan is especially good, as are the other two leads. Elliott bears more than a slight resemblance to Christopher Guest btw. Recurrent musical motif pinched from Tchaikovsky. The roller-coaster finale has to (or ought to) be some sort of noir icon. Oh yeah, and Rembrandt was cool too.

Jazzy dialogue that gives you whiplash and gives a sharp voice to the outcasts: the immigrants, the anxious, the unknowingly oppressed masses believing themselves to be free. Sheridan falls back in love with a Spectre, while a Devil lurks in her shadow. It's a special piece of American macabre that best ends as a roller-coaster ride.

Even though this didn't really leave a lasting impression on me, one almost never go wrong with classic noir. I should try to fit in some more, it being Noirvember and all.

A highly entertaining and suitably moody noir film with a fantastic rollercoaster (literally) ending. Sufficiently convoluted plot and ambiguous characters to keep you guessing.

An often great noir that culminates in one of the genre's finest moments: a high-stakes rollercoaster ride that is heartwrenching and terrifying. Ann Sheridan is also wonderful, and there's a wry charm to the script (love the scene where Dennis O'Keefe deliberately leaves the door open) and a fun-house quality to the images that helps this one stay consistently compelling.

Good performances by Ann Sheridan and Robert Keith as well as a taught, tense plot make this watchable. The climax at the amusement park is good, but the ending felt a bit abrupt to me. As far as noir goes, IMO this one is just ok.

Unexpectedly fun, and more light-hearted than one expects from noir. Solid writing, solid acting, and deft handling of tone--solid entertainment.

A good example of how to use simple twists, clichés and convenient cues, and get away with it. A noir that might deserve more attention, especially for its storytelling.

How could he abandon Rembrandt like that?

On point, but somewhat ordinary noir at first, but slowly grew as we get to know the key characters and how they interacted. For me it was the climax roller coaster scene that truly won me over. The traumatic screams and hectic editing, worked perfectly for that particular moment. Ann Sheridan's best movie in years.
