Jackson won an Oscar for her multi-edged portrayal. The film is sensuously shot and dramatized more for mood and effect than plot and action. Bates and Reed co-star and they read the tricky dialogue with spectacular skill.

Maybe I don't get Ken Russell. Maybe I'm not high-brow enough to get the message D.H. Lawrence had in mind here. Or maybe Ken Russell just sent me a cheesy 19th century Harlequin romance, wrapped up in a pretentious arthouse film box and set on fire on my front doorstep.

It at least features some impressive acting from the four leads, but it's overall a shabby and confused production. It's always nice to see demonic love, but I've seen it done better in plenty of other films.

Unlikable, unrelatable and completely pretentious characters whining the whole film. The direction was gorgeous and the acting is superb for the most part, minus some seriously bad over acting. It's worth watching/experiencing once but that's about it. Also it's way too long for its own good.

A little too self-consciously sensuous, too overtly symbol, but remarkably restrained for Russell. Reed and Jackson are particularly fine.

Satisfactory rendering of a celebrated novel, with excellent period detail atoning for rather irritating characters. The nude wrestling scene was a famous first.

Many questions raised by the characters of this film are still fresh and unanswered. “Women in Love” is provoking at start and creative camera movements draw attention to the different style of the film, but unchanged creativity becomes dull towards the end. The final freeze frame was crazy, in a good way.

An animalistic and erotic study of love and sexual attraction. There is a raw power in Ken Russell's direction, and the four leads do a wonderful job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of love affairs and long-term relationships.

It feels like it has to squash the DH Lawrence novel into a film under two hours and the last half falters a little, but this adaptation manages to overcome these problems very well. With Alan Bates, Oliver Read, a female cast (Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden) as strong as the male one, and moments of delirium created by the director throughout it is incredibly watchable and a great drama.

well that was interesting. some awesome ken russell moments in here, but i suspect the source material is rubbish, because i didn't like the narrative nor all the nonsense about love.

As pretentious as modernist Russian cinema, but with ample sexuality and without the emotional depth. This film, while entertaining is too absorbed in its own illusions of philosophical profundity. The cast is mostly excellent, but the roles themselves are un-compelling.

Has a few memorable scenes, but all in all the material is too subtle for a brash and loud director like Russell. I never got what people saw in Glenda Jackson, but Bates and Reed are superb.

Love-sex things-thoughts. Very uninteresting, except for some stylings.

Yay! Incessantly unpredictable. Has all the thoughts any stilted, stunted lover ever had.
