Wonderland

2003
Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Wonderland explores, in "Rashomon"-like fashion, the brutal multiple murders that took place high atop Wonderland Avenue in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon during the summer of 1981. At first the case seemed to involve only the usual strung-out drug dealers and party hounds, but it quickly became elevated to classic L.A. noir when it was discovered to be connected to the infamous porn king John C. Holmes. (Lions Gate Films)

Excellent soundtrack and wonderful cast but a fairly weak story. Like a K-Mart Blue Light Special of Boogie Nights.

I'll forever be a Val Kilmer mark. Not necessarily required reading, but I have to say I enjoyed it more than Boogie Nights.

A movie about the porn industry and its stars needs more nudity.

An interesting story, I like the impartial POV. Not sure if I like the lack of exposition (especially regarding Holmes' wife and girlfriend)!

Suffered from lack of development from some of the characters. Still was interesting enough. I can't decide how I feel about Kilmer's performance.

I love this movie! Tells a great story and Kilmer is amazing!

Scattershot, disorganised account of material better handled in BOOGIE NIGHTS, nevertheless remains watchable thanks to a terrific cast, and unusual but effective casting choices. McDermott as a scuzzy low-life and Fisher as a repressed religious nut stand out, though Kudrow's heartfelt performance as Holmes' wife deserves a screenplay with more meat to it. An ultimate lack of real insight into these self-destructive characters is the ultimate crippling blow.

It's not bad, but it just didn't end up that engaging. I remember parts where I faded in and out, the weak characters and story really felt bumped up by some of the actors. A poor mans Boogie Nights.

It is an uncomfortable story that's not told very well, but the acting is convincing, making for a watchable film.
