Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror
The documentary explores the folk horror phenomenon from its beginnings in a trilogy of films - Michael Reeves' Witchfinder General (1968), Piers Haggard's Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) and Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man (1973) - through its proliferation on British television in the 1970s and its culturally specific manifestations in American, Asian, Australian and European horror, to the genre's revival over the last decade. Academic without getting too dry (the magic of showing a yabbo during a lecture) Love seeing the people interviewed, finally a chance to use that Masters in folklore you disappointed your parents over. Another one of those movie docs you watch with your watchlist open.

I still feel there’s more of a thesis to be explored but it’s a damned fine start. Fun fact: folklorism is frighteningly important but has incredible baggage. This tries to address the issue, but it still falls prey to a certain worldview - tethered a bit too tightly to the Unholy Trinity - that doesn’t give the genre a chance to breathe like it wants, and should.
