Especially "Workingman's Death" is a great, hypnotic, ravishing film about lives we can only imagine. Glawogger was a great documentarian, maybe even Austria's best filmmaker, in a way continuing Herzog's ethnographic work with fresh, ecstatic images.

Hello, Coalpit! Soviet coal mining history with John Zorn's music is something unrivalled. Though a second segment is the best

Had to dock 15 points for the weak and rushed 5th act, the utterly ridiculous and unnecessary epilogue, and the director's obsession with having people strike awkward poses in front of the camera. Other than that, this is a really powerful movie, especially that 3rd act. Holy crap, don't tell PETA what's going on in Nigeria.

"The patina of this avant-garde exercise is swanky and alluring, but chip away at it and you will expose a hollow center." - Ed Gonzalez

It's clearly edited with a perspective of "holy shit how can people live like this?" but in tone the film is very non-judgemental about both the work or the people that do it. The interviews aren't really complaints either. For these people this is life, some wish they had better, and some are happy with what they have, but the film shows us what is and lets us make our own judgements. It's all really engaging and eye opening and goes by way more quickly than I would have thought.
