Really surprised by this film. One of the most honest and real comedies I've seen in ages. Most impressive is the ability by Goldthwait and co. to create comedy out of the darkest of subjects. Excellent performances by Williams as the father and Sabara as the sleazy son. One of the best films I've seen all year.

Reminds us that there was once this magical time when Robin Williams didn't suck more ass than a diesel-powered enema. The pessimist in me loves Bobcat's dark sense of humor. The optimist in me...sucks.

So Robin died less than a week ago, I've drank enough scotch that is become a waste of good scotch (Oban 14 if you were wondering, good stuff), and I watched this film all by my lonesome. Shits fucked up. Bobcat really does nail the awkward cringe humor and making you hate society. That with the scotch and the death simultaneously made this movie hilarious and horribly depressing. Whatever, I'm rust rambling now.

It is exceptionally rare to find a comedy drama that is entirely successful. It is rarer still to find one that also tries to provide some poignant social commentary and satire. World's Greatest Dad hits the mark in nearly every way conceivable.

would have never thought goldthwait had it in him to take over the reigns and become a competent writer/director, but he did a pretty decent job. while i was surprised with the quality of the movie, it just doesn't have the stuff of great movies in it. decent story, good acting, just not that memorable of a movie though.

The titular stoic-sad dad role suits Williams - it's a mostly very good performance. The first act is splendidly dark and walks the dark comedy tightrope commendably but the satire following the twist is less edgy. An inversion of the amounts of screen time given to that and to the interesting father-son relationship would have been preferable. There are some nice music video-ish montages... The last one I really didn't need, though.

All the characters seem like caricatures. This makes like film more goofy than necessary. And in the end it is just a comedy in stead of being a profound and realistic take on a great subject, which is a shame.

Whoa. I mean, I expected dark comedy; it's right there on the DVD jacket, and it's directed by Bobcat Goldthwaite, for God's sake. But this.. man, this is dark. I almost felt guilty for finding it funny, and that's saying something. A pointed, satirical watch that mines jet-black humour from the most tragic of places.

Darkly funny. Has the kid from spy kids being an absolute shit. Robin Williams plays a very subdued role in this one, still evoking laughter despite not using his usual manic delivery. Also the movie that made me start paying attention to Bobcat Goldthwait as a director. Give it a watch.

This works both as a black comedy and as a straight drama - it's a triumph in tone. It's no great wonder that no studio would touch this movie with a ten-foot pole, but I for one love its audacity. One of Robin Williams' best performances, and that's saying quite a lot, considering his career. World's Greatest Dad deserves to be seen by more people.

Ah, screw it. I reservedly disliked this right after seeing it, then with time I think I am realizing how refreshing, iconoclastic, and subversively brilliant it might actually be. It's humanism written and directed by the guy that lit the Tonight Show furniture on fire, which pretty much sums up the tone of the piece.

Robin Williams is an actor who is all too often guilty of letting his own personality get in the way of the character he is trying to play. (Although that isn't always a bad thing.) There is not even a hint of that in World's Greatest Dad. He plays a man who is somewhat immoral yet ultimately likeable. Mainly because he has suffered for so long we want to see him achieve something - even if that is simply happiness.

I wasn't entirely happy with the way it was handled, but I still liked that they threw in something a little different. The ideas the movie put forth weren't exactly original, but they're worth presenting. I think it's worth checking out.

World's Greatest Dad is effective at doing what it wants to. It makes a point, sticks with it through to almost the very end, and while it chickens out to avoid being too dark and cynical, it still manages to hammer its ideas home in a way that will keep them in your head. It has two effective lead performers in Robin Williams and Daryl Sabara and it will make you feel a whole range of emotions, even though it fails to hook you in, which may make it hard to get into for many viewers.

Fucking. Astonishing. I'd enjoyed it before, but viewing after my closest friend's suicide unraveled its true nuance. Incredibly complex, witty, brutally satirical yet genuinely heartfelt in a deeply cynical (though accurate) representation of truths others dare not whisper. It boldly pronounces our flawed humanity without detesting it, instead embracing empathy & understanding even in typically antagonistic roles. One may describe it as a dark comedy, but, more accurately, its simply honest.

A very surprisingly good film! Most of the characters give you a strong feeling for them, you'll either hate them or love them and this film is a prime example of great character development. A lot of cool homages and satire of "hypocrites". The concept is really original and interesting but the plot of the film goes into somewhat of a familiar cliche storyline but a surprisingly odd and great ending. I enjoy this film all the way and highly recommend it!

A black comedy with misanthropic tendencies, World's Greatest Dad is a dark and humorous film that has something cynical but relevant to say about the posthumous cult of celebrity, our collective obsession with fame, and our trenchant culture of grief. Goldthwait is perhaps trying hard to distance himself morally from his subjects, and his satire is occasionally too mean spirited and broad, but Williams provides the emotional anchor in what's arguably a career best performance.

Goldthwait's brand of cynicism-as-satire doesn't gibe with me very well, and as a filmmaker he leans too heavily on the musical montage which makes half the movie look like a '90s-era music video. But I like black comedy, so I laughed quite a bit. The best joke in the whole movie is when you're looking up who played the son on IMDb because he looked kinda familiar and you realise it's that little boy from "Spy Kids". Wow.

There are a few things I like about Robin Williams: he's a talented comedic and dramatic actor, he's prolific, and he's not afraid to make some risqué choices. All of which has resulted him turning up in this unusual black dramedy of dysfunctional relationships, one of the main tropes of modern American indie cinema. The idea is fresh and well-executed, with many interesting characters. However it runs out of steam and originality in the third act. Definitely worth a look though.

I've seen it twice so far (both times for free) and I have to say that it's a very interesting meditation on celebrity and death. the humour was mostly comprised of funny things that could conceivably happen if this were a real life situation. Since the comedy felt natural to me it didn't take away from the drama. The friends who saw it with me disagreed.

One of those dark comedies that truly sit inside of its filthy pit of dark. The turning point of the film is so shocking but there's no way I can watch it without laughing. Daryl Sabara does something I've seen few actors do: ensure you hate their character from their first scene. I love this film, I can't say it's a marvel of film, but it's highly recommended.

Very formulaic structure and somewhat hollow, tacked-on ending. That being said, the dark subject matter and emotional honesty are refreshing, and Goldthwait is a competent director. The humor is uneven, but the unfunny parts generally carry enough emotional weight to keep you interested. Williams and Sabara are both pretty good, and the comedian cameos are fun to spot if you're in the know. Goldthwait's cameo is under-stated and surprisingly hilarious (to me). Black comedies usually don't gel with me, but this one truly succeeds at blending the comedy with the outright twisted drama. Don't be turned off by the excessive potty humor in the beginning (which I loved, thanks to a brilliant job by the kid from Spy Kids). The film morphs into a more tongue-in-cheek black comedy after the big "twist". There needed to be a few more scenes to reinforce the motivations behind what Williams does in the end, but overall this was very entertaining.

This is an obscure movie that treads very dark waters to sporadically interesting effect. For the most part, it felt very wrong and off-putting. Director Goldthwait turns the screws a bit carefully early on, and once the movie shifts gears, it simultaneously falls apart yet holds your interest. I can't say I enjoyed it as the film gets way too heavy for its own good. Dark comedy is one of the most difficult genres, and "World's Greatest Dad" is a big miss of an intriguing concept.

Balances the dark themes and content with a wonderfully dry performance from Robin Williams, and Daryl Sabara makes that kid so unlikeable that the whole movie comes off more as sweet and twisted rather than downright unpleasant. Expands on territory previously explored in 'SimOne' and 'Wag the Dog'. Goldthwait hits all the right nodes in a song about the hypocrisy of public empathy, but struggles with the accent. The son is an excessive caricature, purposely I know, but it renders the first act nearly unwatchable. Also, the songs that begins each montage, comments on the exposition, to an annoying degree. Williams, however, hones in on a close to career best, surprisingly subdued, and worth admission fee alone.

Featuring one of Robin Williams' best late-career performances, WORLD'S GREATEST DAD posits that manufactured happiness is just as painful as authentic misery. Bobcat Goldthwait finds what is likely the sweet spot in his half-cynical, half-merciful worldview, where neither are the normies too cartoonish nor the misfits too holy, and where the cringes are pretty reasonably balanced with the laughs.

With a thick vein of jet-black humour running throughout, WGD is a refreshing indie notable for holding its perfect comedy/drama tone. Consistently amusing, it still manages to retain poignancy when required (the scene where Lance discovers his son is particularly moving, even more so when you know what happened to Williams). Never spills over into corny territory (even with the predictable climax), makes some astute comments on society, and sports a fitting soundtrack too. I liked it.

The third feature film from stand-up howler turned writer-director Goldthwait is a fantastically dark comedy. Goldthwait proves to be a skillful satirist and a properly relentless adherent to his own grim vision. He's also a better writer than director at this point; the film occasionally gets stuck in a bland procession of predictable visuals. That doesn't hurt that much, though. Overall the film is devilishly bracing.
