Extremely interesting. Good characters, great acting, intense. It went places that I didn't expect it to - I never expected it to be as realistically awkward as it was - but it's probably for the better because of that.

Absolutely amazing story with no beginning or end, a section of a memoir of an amazing set of characters. Beautiful.

Intersex folks, especially kids have a real hard time getting their story heard and I'm glad such a moving, brilliantly acted film came along to do it. It's brave and uncomfortable and this is reality. Gripping stuff, questioning gender, sexuality, what you think is normal.

I'm surprised there aren't more films about hermaphrodites. Just seems like something that would make for compelling viewing... and as XXY proves: it does. This was an excellent, honestly told film that respects its audience, and has a lot of brave performances.

It's a pretty quiet and simple film. Even when things got dark or raw, it felt like the filmmakers held back. I find the subject matter very interesting, but this film didn't quite go far enough or explore enough to make it brilliant, I thought.

The opening, and a few other parts, are a bit clumsy but mostly it does a great job of presenting the situations and letting them unfold with very little judgement or sensationalism. A variety of things happen but none is overdone, all just pieces in the main character's journey of self acceptance. I liked the wide supporting cast, as they all represent different perspectives on the lead's gender identity struggle. A very insightful and touching film that walks a fine line in tone successfully.

Of course it can’t avoid getting too annoyingly dramatic.

Engrossing stuff, which has a couple intense moments and an excellent performance by Inés Efron as a young intersex person who is trying to figure out who she is and what she wants. It manages to cover its subject matter without lecturing or becoming self-important, and instead looks at it with sensitivity and restraint. Impressive.

A special teen story dragged down by weak adult characters. Efron is really good here.

This delicate and audacious teenage drama is a bit irregular in the second half -- Puenzo sometimes tries to be too tragic instead of realistic --, but keeps you shocked all the way.

"There's a secret at the heart of XXY, but the real mystery is why writer-director LucÃa Puenzo insists on unnecessary symbolic gestures for a story otherwise told with delicacy, restraint, and maturity." - Nick Schager

Intense and understated emotional performances make this an interesting and challenging film about the pain of adolescence and parent/child relationships.
