I love the exhilaratingly explored disintegration of sexual mores, I love the narrator's irony-drenched asides that pinpoint the characters' ignorance of a ravenous class divide and culture of corruption in Mexico, I love the last-minute revelation that brings a new context to every scene with a certain character, I love the joy that permeates every shot of this film.

A personal favorite. It's a strange, but mesmerizing journey that leaves you alone and gasping at the end (like life.) It's a movie that wants to say so much and says it so well and with such earnestness. A road movie-buddy comedy mashed with existential class and sexual commentary. Unbelievable. Also, I'm always a sucker for García Bernal, but it's Maribel Verdú who gives the best performance.

Didn't get the hype. Sure, it's energetic and realistic and sexy and there's a neat melancholy undertone in the final scenes, plus some superb camerawork (Cuarón is a versatile talent). But for the most part it also seems kinda airless, not funny enough to be a clear-cut comedy, not focused enough to deliver a powerful message on human relationships and sexuality. Oh and I found the pompous narrator a crude way to add needless political context (Buñuel did that better).

The sexuality doesn't feel like an exhibition and is probably the closest to being realistically portrayed, with everything not being so much about sweat and soft focus and passion, but sometimes being embarrassing or funny. I also never realized how beautiful Mexico looked, I've always been afraid of it. The film is laid out almost as if everything the characters come across on their trip was by chance, making the story occur very spontaneously. And jesus, that woman has an ugly crying face.

Let me say this. The title is hilarious. Anyways. This is a classic road movie in the very best sense, with believable and realistic sex thrown in. It may be the best road movie I've ever seen. Maybe. I saw this thrown on to quite a few "best of the decade" lists, and I totally understand why. Don't watch the trailer though. It's so bad that it almost stopped me from watching the movie.

I wouldn't normally describe a lot of movies as sexy, but I will make an exception here. It's funny to watch what is essentially a teenage road trip movie and getting a really deep experience out of it. It includes the stuff that is in the Hollywood movies in the same vain (sex, drugs, racy humor) but is done in such a deeper way it makes the Hollywood counterparts look like the work of hacks. Do not overlook this gem.

Up-close-and-personal handheld camerawork combined with saturated, blown-out colours which evoke the sweaty heat of a tropical country. This movie has it all, and its laid-back attitude is a joy to watch. Whether you like the characters or not, it's hard not to tag along and imagine you are on a spontaneous Mexican holiday with two of your best friends.

The female character is tragic, but there's still so much joy throughout, and I always want to go travel the world afterwards. The three leads range from good to great (I really like Bernal in this) and the editing, cinematography, and direction are all pitch-perfect.

Exceptional filmmaking from an artist who, so far as I can tell, never misses. Having now seen this, I can see why Cuarón was approached to make more popular films. It’s very immersive and impressive. But we also have some excellent performances here, with a very fascinating, original script. It’s one of those movies you have to see the understand the hype. It’s very horny😂But never to a point that detaches from the profound themes and a really good ending. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.

It's a story about people and relationships and friendships, and the moments that seem so significant that they'd last forever, but then they fade away into a memory, same as some friendships and relationships do. It feels full of live with every image and that's what I liked about it the most, I feel. It's just vivid with the colors and sounds and scenery and the little details of the rundown villages and the endless beaches and the sea.

This film brought my attention to Bernal & Luna, so it has my utmost thanks. The chemistry between the 3 stars sizzles. I'm also happy to have been introduced to the works of Alfonso Cuaron. Would have liked a somewhat different ending between B&L but you can't always get what you want. Really placed Mexican cinema on my radar in a more appreciative manner than I would have thought.

The sex scenes while silly do look authentic. But I felt hints of artificialness like I was watching the film version of a young-adult fiction novel rather than the portrayal of life in both it's ugly and absolutely beautiful realities. Like the sex was in there not to portray human nature but bring in the crowd and the drama was there to make the plot appear deep. One thing we can be sure of is that the dramatic ending makes the film appear way more powerful than it actually is.

I saw this film some years ago on TV, and remember being impressed by it. I finally saw it again just to discover how utterly pointless and unpleasant it really is. Cuarón shows effort to make this film something more than teenage sex dramedy using political backdrop, but these efforts are either poor or lost to me because I'm not familiar with Mexican politics. As for coming of age/experimenting with sexuality... well, that was just gay.

Parts of it border on a stoner comedy or a road trip movie (and it certainly is funny), but it reaches to greater heights and captures a wonderful viewpoint of life, especially the romantic and sexual aspects. One complaint: the omniscient narration was an interesting idea, but overall it was ineffective, often drawing attention away from the main story instead of adding to it. Powerful revelations and insights can still be delivered by the main characters, as shown in the final scene.

Refreshingly frank coming-of-age film is beautifully performed by the three leads (Verdu is quite wonderful as the older woman) and the screenplay does an excellent job of realistically depicting their interactions (though even the final plot twist doesn't really give adequate motivation as to why Verdu accompanies the lads on their journey). Unfortunately certain scenes have a repetitive quality to them, and much like its heroes the film grows aimless and unfocussed at several key junctures.

I can't really say I disliked it, so much as I felt it simply didn't live up to its potential, in either story-telling or character development. Truth be told, this would have made a better short story or novella than film.

Even if its basic elements aren't particularly original or profound (road trip, love triangle, suppressed homosexual tension), it still manages to be incredibly poignant. Not to mention it's just a lot of fun to watch.

The story arcs nicely from joyous youthful energy to something more contemplative, just like life. The sex is frank and realistic, the photography and scenery are beautiful, and the sardonic narration adds an ironic political commentary.

Very mixed on this. A combination of childish impetuousness (sometimes annoying, sometimes cute) with an underlying dialogue on unspoken ideas and thoughts. What seems simple here is not; despite how easy it may seem going down. I would say that nothing here is incredibly profound, just an intelligent twist on an enjoyable movie.
