Sporting a much lower budget, and in the era of primitive digital technologies, Sato's adaptation is a much different kettle of fish to the Kurosawa film (no surprise). Seems to stop in by way of Kwaidan, and aesthetically emphasises the supernatural in the story, while the foibles of the plot are negligible, and forgotten as the film becomes a dream of the natural elements. Those watching who are interested primarily in the original story may feel deflated.
