There are a few somewhat funny moments, but overall it is bland and predictable. Black and Cera play the same characters they always do, only this time they're cavemen! Mostly sophmoric humor. I would advise seeing History of the World: Part One instead, the same premise is done much better there.

Perhaps the negative reviews and bad press prepped me for a terrible film, but I have to admit I marginally enjoyed "Year One." It's very stupid, and it definitely gets many things wrong, but at the same time it's so easy-going and shameless. Michael Cera really helps propel the film - if you are a Cera fan and haven't tired of his shtick, then "Year One" should be a good time. Jack Black doesn't add much to the fun, and Ramis can't quite close a scene, but I had a few good laughs with this.

Rather tragically bad. I really like Michael Cera (which is why I gave this one a shot in spite of the reviews), and indeed his chronologically-displaced George Michael Bluth was the source of most of the few laughs, but this is a really, really stupid movie.

Why did this get so bashed by critics? I watched it straight through with my dad and we both laughed several times. Sure, the jokes aren't that original, but it is funny in a History of the World kind of way...and actually, while History of the World was only funny for the first hour, this was relatively funny throughout.

Even with a cast as good as this, Ramis managed to make one of the unfunniest comedies I've seen in some time. I didn't think you could go wrong with Black and Cera.

I believe I chuckled once. And that was probably a pity chuckle. Probably quality-wise somewhere between "Epic Movie" and "Bring It On 5: Tango Till Try-Outs!" (note: the actual title of Bring It On 5 might not be 100% correct). In two words: Awfully unfunny.

Get on your high horse and compare it to Mel Brooks all you want, this is a schtick vehicle, plain and simple. Michael Cera either got a lot of improv leeway, or is some sort of line delivery savant.

I was very comfortable with this flick, it was funny from start to finish, Black laid down his typical chops (which I'm still a fan of, but I haven't seen him improve since School of Rock - save The Holiday, in which he was fantastic). I'm still enamored with Cera's shtick so that definitely helped. I put this on the same level as Pineapple Express - it's good, not great or all that much of a benchmark. Don't go into this flick looking for historical accuracy, it's not that kind of flick.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone seems to hate this film. Black and Cera play off one another pretty well, and Oliver Platt (along with many of the other supporting characters) were even funnier. I'm never a huge fan of toilet humor though, and that did make up a sizeable portion of the film, so it loses points there.

Just the type of dumb comedy that I can appreciate even when it's objectively bad. None of its message sticks at all, but enough of the jokes land for it to get by. And damn I love Olivia Wilde. And Paul Scheer, for slightly different reasons.

Disappointing. A few sporatic laughs, but should have - and could have - been much better. The forced emotional sentiment didn't do it any favors, either.

You'd be better off watching the movie Caveman. It felt like Ringo Starr put more effort into his role in that movie than Jack Black and Michael Cera were putting into this film. There were a few funny parts (mostly with Oliver Platt and David Cross) but not nearly enough to suggest this to anyone.

What did Harold Ramis smoke when he wrote this movie, honestly?! Despite the lacking plot (but maybe it is even better to have none), I liked the interaction of Black and Cera. Actually, I had to laugh a lot (much more than I thought I would). I found 3/4 of the movie somewhat funny. Towards the end, when the movie tries to get the plot again (which it shouldn't have) it becomes crappy.

Pretty painful. There are a few extended cameos that draw some quality laughs, but they manage to taint every joke that works by dragging it out too long or putting something stupid on the end of it. Every. single. one. I'm assuming this is a product of the writer's strike? There's no other explanation for how awful the script is. Non-stop poop and fart jokes, none of which are particularly funny. Harold Ramis, what the hell are you doing?

Watchable film, but I wish I hadn't paid for it. There are basically 2 scenes that are hilarious, everything else is hit or miss. It seems like Ramis wanted to try and actually say something in this film, in terms of religion, but just couldn't or didn't follow through with it.

I enjoyed this comedy a million times more than I thought I would! It's classic JB mannerisms and Cera's subtle charm that fuel this film. That being said, My friend and I were the only ones laughing in the theater. I hope that a "Year Two" is in the works. The two issues I had with the film were it seemed like it found a hard time trying to end scenes and one scene was over the top with an anti-religionish rant. The moral of the film was a secular message so that scene felt redundant.

I don't really understand the critical hatred of this movie. It's a dumb comedy but an effective one and for my money it delivers laughs aplenty. Rich with cameos by Hank Azaria, Paul Rudd, Oliver Platt, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse not to mention some of Jack Black's more endearing work and solid work from the consistently funny Michael Cera it is almost free of major flaws. Occasional eye roll moments from the screenplay are very forgivable given they are surprisingly rare in this.

I'm surprised how much I laughed. It was incredibly stupid, but had me laughing and it takes a lot for a movie to do that for me. Maybe it's because I like Jack Black so much and it would hurt to say I didn't like one of his movies.

The first half of this movie is much stronger than the second. I liked the movie's free-wheeling, "Let's make these two idiots play the role of God in various scenes from the Bible!" idea but that was abandoned in favor of doing a bunch of boring in Sodom. ALSO: Jack Black eats poop in this movie.

Silly but endearing comedy gets most of its mileage from Cera's droll self deprecations (not coincidentally Ramis' stock and trade); it's a pity the otherwise shambling screenplay can never settle on a consistent tone, relying on its performers to sell the material as best they can. Cross and Platt fare best in the supporting cast; Black feels like an odd fit, especially paired with Cera.

With all the religious references you might think that there could be some interesting satire underneath the silly exterior, but sadly it's just a hook, leaving the film entirely reliant on how well it pulls off its jokes. It doesn't pull them off very well. It grows on you a little and is decently amusing at times, but for the most part it's stale, shallow and a lot of the jokes fall flat.

I'm sorry, I thought Cera was funny. Black is hit or miss as usual but the funnyman bit roles are mostly wasted. David Cross and Paul Rudd are funny people and some of their obvious improv works, but other than that, every other role in the film could have been played by no name actors with none the wiser.

It's a pleasant watch for the most part and Jack Black is the saving grace as always. Alas, the script is so lazy it's hard to consider this decent by any means. A couple of embarrassingly unfunny moments as well as the ridiculously self-serious finale make things even worse. The blooper reel during the end credits packs more laughs than the entire movie, as there's barely any of its spontaneity to be found in the finished product: good ideas aren't absent but they somehow don't amount to much.

I smiled once, maybe twice. Fun but not funny. It didn't take itself too seriously which I'm told is a good thing. I'm giving it a higher score than it probably deserves because every so often someone funnier than Jack Black will pop up and be funny for a few minutes. I like Michael Cera's whole game so I wasn't too disapointed to see he was himself again. Seemed like it went on forever too, even at 90 minutes. In short, it just wasn't funny enough.

I went in expecting a deathly terrible movie but it didn't turn out that bad. Yes, it's full of unfunny lowbrow garbage that really belongs in a "_____ Movie" sequel. However there are some genuinely funny jokes sprinkled throughout the film if you can appreciate the stupid humour the movie presents. However it's still not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination and certainly a disappointment in the fact it's coming from Harold Ramis.
