A well made, but trite and generic rom-com that checks all the boxes. Every now and then I might be in the mood for one of these, and having some decent Beatles covers in the mix only benefits the movie. Funny that with how ubiquitous they are, that they fit right into a movie like this.

I liked it! Admittedly, it does sort of become a romance movie out of nowhere, and I can see where that would turn a lot of people off. It also could have explored it's intruiging premise more than it did. I still found myself pretty invested throughout. The lead actor is fairly likable and talented musically, and I do love Danny Boyle's directing. Ed Sheeran had some of the best scenes for some reason. I guess I don't really know who I would recommend this movie to, but it's not bad!

Starts off with an effective and imaginative central premise, and runs with it without really exploring anything too deeply. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's well-made (as you might expect), the cast are likeable, and the humour and musical points generally land well. I didn't find the central romance particularly affecting, however, and I do feel it left a lot of ideas unexplored. Overall I really rather enjoyed it, but it just felt a bit slight. Sometimes we need slight, I suppose.

With a premise like this it's quite an impressive feat to make not a single interesting rumination on the nature of songwriting or stardom or pop culture (or anything else for that matter). Some credit is deserved for somehow making Ed Sheeran more irritating than before, though.

Yesterday certainly has that Danny Boyle style to it, but it's a mixed bag. The concept of being the only guy who remembers The Beatles and using that information to gain fame and success is great, but the movie falls into predictable cliches and character moments that you see coming a mile away. It didn't feel like they knew exactly what to do with the concept. There's a bit of funny humour here and there and good use of music and shots, as well as British charm to it, but it's average at best.

The best way to describe Yesterday is pleasant. There isn't anything new shown through this film besides its admittedly clever what-if premise, but thanks to the Beatles' catalog (and some quite deep cuts from it as well) it has enough charm to work well as a standard rom-com. It doesn't explore its mechanics too deeply, but that keeps it from getting too bogged down in logistics and plot. A nice, easy-going film that probably won't make much of an impact on its viewers but is highly enjoyable.

Sharing a lineage with Stranger Than Fiction and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, the fantasy shtick of no one knowing The Beatles is an interesting one but it's tied to a very... British romance about a putz not making his moves on Cinderella. With a very soft landing for its climax, this film will probably be forgotten fairly quickly. That being said, I do credit Boyle and co. for not focusing on the lead's Indian ethnicity, as some are wont to do these days.

I feel like this harkens back to the era of movie where all people wanted was a happy and convenient ending where the boy gets the girl and everything else is mostly inconsequential. Is that really so bad every now and again? Hell if anything, that kind of makes this movie stand out. I loved Patel's and James' chemistry, the soundtrack is obviously phenomenal, and I just plain enjoyed myself, proving once again that sometimes all you need is an interesting premise and time-tested execution.

Patel and James are the only reasons to stick with this until the end credits. Conceptually it’s interesting in a whimsical sort of way, but the execution is slapdash at best. Throw-in Ed fucking Sheeran (who for some reason thought that placing his songs next The Beatles wouldn’t make them sound even shitter) and Corden and I was out. By the final third I was bored and largely uninterested as ‘Yesterday’ petered out to a fairly typical Curtis humdrum ending.

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! CULTURAL APPROPRIATION! CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!....is exactly what people would be screaming if this were about a white singer who pilfers Michael Jackson's career catalog as his own, but since it's a brown boy stealing from the white man no one cares. I don't either, just pointing out the definite inevitable hypocrisy. With that said, I enjoyed this film a lot. Music is obviously great, Patel has a good singing voice and the characters are lovely. what happens in the film: the beatles are great and their music is the greatest creation of mankind and bla bla bla, john lennon is 78 years old and gives really shitty life advice, ed sheeran is in it because why not (as annoying as always) and, finally, a nice message that tells us that what's really important in life is heterosexual love. by the end, my eyes were starting to bleed uncontrollably. at least kate mckinnon is great.

The humour is spot-on, the characters fun, and the two leads have excellent chemistry (though their relationship plays out awkwardly and seems in the end unnecessary). McKinnon appropriately plays a caricature since the premise is the kind of 1-note joke that goes on for too long as an SNL skit . Curtis somehow manages to come up w/ enough ways to approach this idea so that this isn't excruciating but it isn't enjoyable either. It's also unfortunately attached to one of those horribly implausible romances where a boy suddenly realizes that he's in love w/ his lifelong friend. Predictably, he also has 1 of those rom-com goofy & exasperating buddies in tow.

I loved it. Very feel good movie. Lily James is adorable (and I liked the clothing gags). Kate McKinnon MVP. Everyone comes together well in their parts, even the nonspeaking friends (who were quite supportive). Alt ending (reversal) was funny. Would have loved to see more Wonderwall. Very heartbreaking scenes between the two leads. Fav scene: coffee shop at the train station. Fav scene update: Ellie in his room talking about columns.

A film that is so sweet-natured and good hearted that you *want* to embrace it, but so twee and affected in its worst moments (Sheeran's appearance is cringe inducing), that it becomes a minor chore, especially when a helluva sci-fi premise is left completely underdeveloped (the pop culture ripples that would result from the absence of the Beatles are virtually ignored). Kept on track by a likable cast (with Bhaskar and Syal a delight as Patel's parents), but really a missed opportunity.

A playful concept that is utilised well for the comical moments, as well as a couple of inspiring moments of alternative-universe musings, thanks to the occasional intelligent directing by Boyle -- he nearly makes the most out of this otherwise scrappy and uninspired rendition of the story of fame. Even more uninspired is the central "romance", which awkwardly wobbles back-and-forth, in stark contrast to the overbearing confidence in love that The Beatles espoused.

I thought this movie was incredibly cute. Maybe this too high a score for a movie being cute, but the truth is, Yesterday doesn't take itself too seriously and maybe that means neither should we. It sucks you in to it's stupidity and it wants to catch you believing in the rules of this world. For a fan of the Beatles, I really think this is a no-brainer. Also a few scenes at the end really strike a chord for me. OOF.

A lot of the excellent humor was spoiled in the trailers, especially the Hey Dude bit, though the trailer does inject a misleading element to good effect. And it stretches credibility to the max that the two could be working together closely for years and THEN they hit a spark, especially when one of them is Lily James. The movie is saved by the ending, and they play McCartney singing "Hey Jude" in its entirety through the credits. Almost all of the other songs only get started when they quit.

Has a cool premise, but the execution is pretty standard for the genres it dabbles in. That's not terrible; liked it but wasn't hugely into it. Starts great, but then loses its way when it cuts time from scenes like the Yellow Submarine part and the breakdown of the protagonist in favor of an uninspired romance. Still, it’s entertaining, the humor is decent, and Himesh Patel is charming in the lead role. Ed Sheeran is also quite enjoyable. The early parts of the film are quite accurate showing how difficult it is for a an artist to get recognized, although even with the Beatles catalogue, it wouldn’t be so easy today to make it big.

The problem with most movies with Beatles music is that Beatles covers are almost universally terrible. They cleared the biggest hurdle, then, by having a talented musician to do genuinely good covers. The story has some fun with its premise, but not as much as it could have. At the end of the day, it's a really nice feelgood musical movie with only some shades of its high concept premise.

The film has a really promising, understated first half, where big questions like: What Makes A Song Or Artist Truly Great? and Why Do We Love Music? are mulled over with good humor and through lovely performances... and then the script takes a turn down the trite, predictable road I feared it would, shoving romance to the center and then not paying it off particularly well at all. And then, to top it off, Boyle gives us the problematic John Lennon deification scene, and the magic is truly lost.

While I enjoy some of their songs, I'm not particularly a fan of The Beatles. That said, Yesterday was a mixed bag for me. The music is good and the cast does a decent job; though McKinnon overacts, James is a bit annoying and Patel is a bit bland (as McKinnon's character points out). Fry was great though. There are some great moments in the plot, such as meeting the others who remember the band, and the talk with John Lennon, but there's also too much meandering with the romantic subplot.

Skips the question of whether the Beatles' music would get noticed in the digital age, much less reach the same popularity. It just presents it like it would be destined to because the songs are objectively great, even Ed Sheeran will tell you that, and naturally the best music is what gets most popular, hence Ed Sheeran. I think it would be more interesting if it ended up like Inside Llewyn Davis, condemning a plagiarist to unrecognized brilliance, forever casting pearls before swine in bars.

The film discards so easily its "brilliant" idea of how Beatles songs would be, of course, immensely popular and universal today and also just another product for evil capitalist minds to develop the worst romcom you could think of between oh-the-loser-but-talented-artist and the girl he always loved and never had a proper chance to tell her that -- oh, and she's been waiting this whole time, adoring him. This is a pleasant, mildly amusing music based fantasy film. The main plot intrigued me and I thought it was an entertaining watch but it felt a little too fluffy. Its a nice film but there isn't much explored in terms of what effect on the world there not having been any knowledge of the Beatles may potentially have had. It's also fine to have Ed Sheeran in the movie as himself, but using his songs as backing tracks is an awful stylistic choice and represents the problems with the movie. The end is unsatisfying and it needed more actual Beatles music (start, transcribed, and end) although that would require some script alternations, which were needed anyway.
