Yoshiwara (1937) is the French take on the Japanese geisha genre. Max Ophüls opens the studio based movie magnificently, but sadly doesn't handle the middle portion very well, drifting off an effective course. Builds stronger toward the end, but it's not the emotional bomb it could have been with the forbidden love between the races. Cool to see the silent great Sessue Hayakawa in a European production. He was always an incredible actor and he's no less then that in Yoshiwara as well.
