In the large drawing room, the butler welcomes some friends whom the playwright, now deceased, asked to be summoned for the reading of his will and who all responded to the request. Boring and attractive pos-theater/post-cinema work by the master of pictorical memories, in which there is no art greater than a man talking to a woman about what they feel for each other and simply going crazy over these feelings. The trick is that the auteur is not dead. He's alive, screening a contemporary play while his old folks play their roles as spectators visiting memories. There are sometimes two, three plays/films being shown to us. This is tricky. A film that requires a second view.

Resnais plays around in some unusual ways, and by the conclusion it begins to seem like quite a personal statement about mortality and loss, but to this viewer it did not seem quite to work, possibly due to the limitations of the perhaps dated source material.

Seeing as this is the last film he would release during his lifetime, it seems tempting to interpret this as Resnais commenting on his own impending mortality, yet whatever potential for poignancy there is is pretty much lost amidst the weird combination of mawkish sentimentality and vague pretension (it's an unabashedly meta conceit involving actors playing themselves playing characters in a fictional play by a fictional playwright based on a real play... yeah go figure).

about mimhesis, memory and time, but too simplified and tiring with long dialogues, he repeats himself
