Cody sharply grasps that the female version of the ubiquitous man-child has great potential for tragedy and dark comedy. Mavis is an unforgettable speciment of a delusional teen in a woman's body whom you cannot help but at the same time hate and feel sorry for. Theron, in an impressive performance, makes sure to elicit the required empathy and disgust and Reitman keeps satire and credibility balanced. Cudos to him for turning out four very good films in a row; few directors are that dependable.

Wasn't aware how delightfully dark this would be before I watched it. After not much liking Cody's previous screenplays, this is a definite step in the right direction. Theron and Oswalt play off each other with ease, both providing excellent performances. Found it sinister, charming and uncomfortable in the best way possible.

The girl (Charlize Theron) exemplifies the term "Pretty girl syndrome". A gorgeous girl who is used to getting her way, but finds one day that her life is empty. Failing to appreciate what she has, wallows in the past and fixates on an old flame. Good example of how messed up your life can get when you are living in the past. The people she encounters are nearly oblivious to her internal suffering. I loved Patton Oswalt's character who always seemed to say just the right thing.

Once again Jason Reitman approaches modern American culture with curiosity and respect. As in Juno and Up in the Air, the question of a worthwhile existence is reflected against varying ways of life, unabashedly exploring their imperfections, but also concluding, once again, that one's perspective is a lot more important than one's situation. Theron plays a brutally tragic character, assured of her own superiority while trying to block out her inadequacies. Good flick.

This makes "Juno" look like a cartoon. This is the second time Reitman and Cody have worked together now, and I much prefer this film. I'm probably in the minority with that opinion, but I found this to be a more realistic and humanistic story. While "Juno" is hilarious and does have its fair share of emotion, it still comes across as a bit full of itself whereas "Young Adult" is more subtle, dark, and real.

Mavis is the tragic character for a new generation, and Young Adult is the latest, greatest dark character study. Whether she's chugging Diet Coke, watching the self-obsessed Kardashians every second of downtime she gets or sucking down her ex-boyfriend's beer of choice in high school while scheming to rip him from his wife and child, you can't take your eyes off Charlize Theron who kills every scene she's in.

It's like a dark and lonely version of Sex And The City. She writes books, she's a bitch, she complains about herself and men, she is a consumerist, she tries to get men and make relationships work and then ruins them for herself. Patton Oswalt is really the only good thing about this, I feel sorry for him. Charlize Theron on the other hand is a dumb bitch, and I think we are supposed to actually care about her. She tries to ruin a marriage, and she's just generally annoying, fucking things up.

Caught this randomly on late-night telly, and found myself quite happy to sit through it. Few people seemed to be particularly likeable in it, but the performances were strong enough to make the characters work, and it has enough humour, satire and heart to hold the attention. Could be worth a look if you're in the mood.

The way a character study should be. Led by Theron's great performance, flaws and insecurities are laid bare with no attempt to elicit sympathy nor excuse them. Perhaps the film is a little narrow in scope and the ending a little too clean but it has great moments, a unique perspective and some good laughs.

Jason Reitman's fourth great film is a darkly comic movie that turns serious at the end. Has a great script by Diablo Cody (better than her oscar winning screenplay Juno imho) and Charlize Theron with some of her best acting to date. Also great is Patton Oswalt, giving a funny and charming performance. Jason Reitman is four for four.

Falls victim to repetition by showing Theron acting drunk and slobbery (while still looking insanely hot!), trying to ruin her ex's marriage and getting slapped some sense into by a wonderfully cast Oswalt. The ever lurking possibility of transition drew a constant interest but the sour note it eventually ends on struck me as insulting and self-centered. Yeah Cody, the past has set, you're an Oscar winning writer now, hold your head up high and fuck everyone else.

This is probably Reitman's best film. Same goes for Diablo Cody. I've felt for a while now that...well, 65 years after The Long Weekend, there has been a general failure to address alcoholism in film. This is a problem, and it has always bothered me. Young Adult nails it though, which puts it in rarefied company.

A brave and thorough character study that serves well as a metaphor for today's widespread fear of embracing adult responsibilities and suburbia. Still, the plot isn't as fascinating as Theron's performance deserves and I have a feeling the movie in general won't linger in my mind.

Painfully, cover-your-eyes awkward and brutally unflinching in portraying Mavis as a pathetic has-been trying to recapture her high school glory days. If this doesn't convince people of Cody's obvious writing talent, nothing will. It's equal measures funny and sad and occasionally horrifying.

I thought both Juno and Up in the Air were a little overrated (not bad, just overrated), so I'm surprised to find this Reitman/Cody joint to be not just my favorite of Reitman's last three films but one of my favorites of the year. It achieves a pitch-perfect darkly comic vibe and Theron is really superb. This may seem like an odd compliment, but the film also does an eerily good job capturing the vibe of that town you went to high school in. The feel is so familiar.

Theron's character here is Archie Bunker reborn as a Maxim cover girl, or Cartman with a sex change. It's something remarkable, despite, or in spite of, Cody's self-appreciating field loop (i.e. dialogue). This succeeds because the ending is one of the bravest and best audience Fuck Yous I've seen in quite a while, and I loved it.

There's no comedy in here and while I thought the concept had some promise to it all it managed to get out of me was a cringe here and there from Theron doing horribly regretful things while drunk. I will say that I would have never seen Oswalt in a role like this and he wasn't half bad.

Young Adult first of all has a great, witty and smart script - like all the other Reitman/Diablo films. Sadly, it is wrapped into an indifferent story - just like Up in the Air. I think it's about time Reitman challenged himself and took on a new genre, because he's a talented director. The script and Theron is what saves it from being just another quircky comedy.

I liked Juno and definitely like this better. Cody drops the ball here and there - I didn't buy the bookstore scene, for instance - but in general, boy, can she write. The anti-heroine of Young Adult is a beautifully conceived tragicomic character, and the text absolutely shines in the last several sequences, where, at the drop of a hat, she goes from narcissistic bitch to heart-rendingly relatable loser and back again. This movie is Charlize Theron's finest hour. Funny, moving and real.

Brilliant script by Diablo Cody. Charlize Theron She delivers a solid performance as the neurotic hot mess Mavis Gary. It's actually a tragedy masqueraded as a comedy, a female-version of manchild, who does not love (whether it's romantic or familial) and who does not find redemption after her crucifiction. Young Adult is a anti-cliche anti-love anti-comedy, a breath of fresh air in this tired, repetitive, out-of-idea genre.

Young Adult is a mess of a movie that ultimately works because it has a few moments of humor, and a very strong cast. It works, for the most part, as a character study, but when it tries to make us care about the lead, it fails. It portrays her as unlikable for that majority of the time and then tries to turn it around way too late at the end. It's kind of fun, kind of sweet, and only kind of worth your time.

This girl is sinister and deluded, but I can't help but feel sorry for her. She misses her tiny Minnesota town, yet she pities the people who stuck behind when she moved on to the big city. As adult as she may appear, in her tiny universe, she is caught in her formative years--caught there, and drowning in the drama she's creating. This is a difficult movie to watch, but one that reveals much about hubris and the values with which we lead our big-shot lives.

That rare film in which everyone involved is at the top of their respective games, including extraordinarily well-observed writing, a great performance from Oswalt, and what is for me undoubtedly the best performance of Theron's career thus far and among my favorite performances in cinema. Also, I identify with Mavis more than I should admit. This is a funny and searingly realistic character study that strikes a wonderful balance between being deliciously misanthropic and deeply empathetic.

Honest and poignant. It makes an art out of feeling uncomfortable -- I would characterize the default tone of the film as "unsettling". Theron is great at making it work, and Oswalt and Wilson are a great joy to watch. It's unmistakably a Jason Reitman film, which isn't totally a good thing -- it often feels plain and cold, even with the intimate character material. The ending is inspired, and the film sits well in memory, so it's probably worth a bit more than the sum of its parts.

I get that it bucks convention in its lack of story arc. But doing something differently than everyone else is not the same as doing something well, or something worth doing. While Mavis' final slight of Matt's sister is cleverly done, the hatefulness of the move and the resulting cynicism of the film make the final product a slight evocation of a horrible person. Okay, I get that those kinds of people are around. Now what?

Unusual 4 a H'wood film 2 feature a protagonist who spends most of the film actively insulting the average, decent folk around her & by proxy insulting the life choices made by most audience members themselves. If Theron's character weren't also made so pitiable, it's hard 2 imagine many people sitting through this. Her delusions make her compelling, but leaves the movie nowhere 2 go, except 2 march 2wards an ending whose only accomplishment is stubbornly refusing 2 give the audience an inch.

I liked the character Charlize Theron played in the first 2/3 of the movie. It had good comic potential. However, I hate the way these modern character dramas always have to end up in a "climax of social awkwardness". These scenes make me cringe. And by following this template, the film fell far short of what it could have been. Still, it deserves some praise for its original and wry take on adulthood, nostalgia and love triangles. A decent but typical indie that often treads very familiar ground, Young Adult owes a huge debt to Theron for making the lead character believable, intriguing and even somewhat likable despite her obvious flaws. Whatever faults YOUNG ADULTS has, they're outweighed by Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. Theron, as a burnt-out writer desperately trying to win back her old boyfriend is funny, yet painful; mean-spirited, yet sympathetic. My fave thus far of Jason Reitman's comedy-dramas. His warm, real and dryly funny handling Diablo Cody's naturalistic study of midlife crisis, failure, baggage and rejection is on par with Ricky Gervais' BBC work and other emerging great comedies of pain. Juno was fair, but Young Adult is Charlize Theron's best performance since Monster, though this character is much closer to home, and desperate in a much more familiar way than Aileen.

yeah, yeah, we get it, Mrs. Cody, everyone in Mercury are fat and ugly and can go fuck themselves, i have become a famous writer after all, d'oh! i mean, what a pointless story, which exactly fits for a young adult book. Reitman? There was no Reitman existance in the movie, just Cody's ego.

While it's a mess story-wise, it pisses me off to constantly see Theron have to play the role of nutjobs because she's so pretty. That poor girl is hated for how beautiful she is. I loved her acting and oswalt's too even though it sounded like his comedy at points. Nice and dark, very poorly filmed

I was very surprised by Theron's performance and I loved Oswalt's. There's some really good stuff happening between these two characters. But for some reason, I don't think I will remember this film a couple of months from now. Weird.
