A peace-loving man named Ben Kane (Robert Mitchum) takes a job as deputy marshal of Lords, in the old West. Kane is no lawman, but he accepts the badge because he has an old score to settle with the town's chief trouble-maker (John Anderson). Once on the job, Kane must also deal with a young sharpshooter named Billy Young (Robert Walker Jr.) and a sharp and sassy saloon dancer, Lily (Angie Dickinson). (imdb)

Enjoyable western, distinguished by a typically laid back and breezy Mitchum performance, and some fine directorial work from Kennedy (though a climactic overuse of zooming is a miscalculation). Tries to work in some 'serious' moral consideration in its third act (ala UNFORGIVEN) but the lighter, jokey tone of the preceding tale can't really support it.

Didn't think much of the opening, but I did enjoy Mitchum's relationship with young Billy. Did find it amazing all those different people from a Kansas town could all make their way to the same place.
