Imagine 1988 and 1888 being fused in some kind of conceptual time vortex....... and you're there.

Fun western, if not realistic. It's one to watch if you like a lot of gun-blazin' action. For my part, Billy was a bit too crazy; I couldn't understand why the rest of the Regulators didn't just leave him. But still, he wasn't without some charm. Emilio Estevez will always be Billy the Kid to me.

Attempts to do for Westerns what Kenny Loggins did for fighter planes. The result is watchable, forgettable tat, which, to its credit, tries to keep a serious tone and encourages some acceptable performances from its bunch of stars. The real let down is in the editing, particularly of action scenes, and particularly of the big finale. Gunfights just don't flow very well when everything is in slow motion and half your shots are missing. Emilio Estevez is quite good as a cocksure psychopath.

It's not bad but it's not very good either. The glaring 80's metal soundtrack, which was probably pretty cool when the movie originally came out, now sticks out like a sore thumb. The ensemble cast is indeed impressive but none of the characters really feel fleshed out aside from Billy and Chavez which is disappointing. Ultimately this is more of a nostalgia piece rather than a genuinely good film.

Hunk-O-Rama and the Wild West. Still fun to watch, but Deadwood is better.

Man, I clearly didn't see the same movie that everyone else see. I thought it was kinda slow and I didn't particularly care about most of the characters. It's a fairly realistic western with good performances (specifically Sutherland and Philips), but I feel like this should have been a little more overall. Entertaining but average.

Viewed July 30, 2021. All of the Hollywood westerns from this period (this, Silverado, Tombstone, Maverick) have the same general problem. They assemble starry casts and expansive production design, but have no feel for the classical narrative construction or subversive iconography that makes this genre so satisfying. Some of these movies work well as entertainment, but they all feel disjointed and shallow in surprisingly similar ways.

Unlike Tombstone, Young Guns knew exactly what it was: a pop western that focused on action and conflict. There are undoubtedly many silly moments, a few poor performances, and a shoehorned romance involving Sutherland, but Estevez shines as the mischievous Billy The Kid, a young outlaw with psychopathic tendencies. Whether it's an accurate portrayal is beside the point in this context when it's this colorful and engaging, and the shoot outs are gritty and plentiful.

Stylized shit. But entertaining stylized shit. Also, the oh-so-80's soundtrack is pretty damn funny.

Hooray for cheesy 80s westerns. I find Emilio irritating in general, but hey, it has Jack Bauer in it, and he's everyone's hero.

Cheesy action western with a big cast of 80s heart throbs playing a gang of renegade lawmen. It's not great but it's fast and fun and has high sentimental value for people just the right age.

More along the lines of Tombstone, a slicked up modern western than is more fun than fact. It is highly entertaining thanks to a fun cast especially Estevez.

Completely irrational score given as this was one of my all-time favorites as a kid. The film is surprisingly accurate historically while still providing enough entertainment throughout. Take my score with a grain of salt. I enjoy it immensely but I doubt anyone else likes it as much as I do.

Emilio Estevez plays Billy the Kid as a crazy adrenaline junkie using Tunstall death as a reason for action. He is only good for driving the action, not that magic that makes a good western. The film does attempt to build some of that magic with the others, like when 'Doc' Scurlock saves the girl sold into slavery. However it's Billy that makes everything happen and he is a tornado that destroys everything in his path. Good westerns are about the people with action to sharpen the focus.

Young Guns is a "pop" western with none of the rawness, realism, or style of the greats. It's mindlessly entertaining and has a certain 80's charm it.

Loved this while I was in high school--the sort of mythic status afforded BtK as the one who stood up to power really appealed to me. It felt transgressive in that way. Seeing it many years later, it's got some charm and humor, but its soft rock soundtrack, non-sensical plot moves, and slo-motion climax puts a damper on the whole business.

Estevez, Siemaszko, and even Kiefer Sutherland, are perfectly cast in a western, that truly feels like a real great western - for the first 45 minutes. It goes downhill from there (especially the pacing) but not without a few terrific scenes in between.
