spoilers: once it's revealed that the father doesn't know his son that well, you realize the movie is just setting up for an ending revelation to make you re-evaluate and/or justify the assault. it's somewhat of a rebuke against the satisfaction in revenge tropes, but doesn't deviate much from the basic formula itself. similar to blue ruin but just more stale
