You only think you know blunt, until you see this. If that's not enough to get you going, Sorrentino had re-invented a whole new level of banality and blatancy for this movie alone. He doesn't trust his audience to think, you see, thus he makes sure to put his symbolic scenes and alegoric dialogs straight into your face oh so elegantly. This leads to Miss Universe being the smartest chick in the movie by far, for she didn't speak much or maybe because she had big boobs, can't remember which now.

Works best in the silent glances and movements from place to place. Occasionally the dialog gets too clumsy in how it pontificates life and the inherent meanings therein. There remains an elegance to it where it certainly travels similar themes to Sorrentino's masterpiece The Great Beauty but it's unfair and inaccurate to label this as simply the English version of that movie.

The first movie I've ever watched based solely on the poster. I said to my friend I hope that's us one day - just lounging in a hot tub as old dudes, looking at titties. Then we watched it. Oh and that nude scene will go down as one of the 3 best of all time. The movie is a bit disjointed and weird but it has such a great mood and atmosphere throughout that I enjoyed it all the way through. Great soundtrack and pretty depressing throughout.

An uneven mess, and I must admit that so many of Paolo Sorrentino's choices stand in sharp contrast to the types of things I like (Namely, his use of music generally lacks any subtlety, and he doesn't construct scenes in any sort of logical way). But acting-wise, the film feels like a victory lap for Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel, and their relationship is pleasant enough and their dialogue loaded with enough witticisms that the movie never really becomes unenjoyable.

I'm not entirely sure what this movie was doing, and I don't know that the director knew either. It meandered every which way. Much of the film suggested that cinema takes itself far too seriously, but it seemed to take itself far too seriously.

Some well-framed shots and a few genuinely funny scenes (loved Weisz' meeting with the mountaineer), but otherwise nigh-on insufferable. Themes are hammered home, plot elements are suddenly tied up neatly with no real causal foreshadowing and everything is draped in grotesque cuts (an elegant shot of a woman singing becomes an unflattering close-up of her eating) masquerading as humour and an empty, pseudo-provoking aesthetic (primarily juxtapositions of conventional beauty and unsightliness).

I loved the indulgent attitude of this film. The discussion about levity at the start truly sets the tone for this mosaic of strange encounters and bittersweet reflection set in a dreamlike Swiss hotel. Sorrentino continues to win me over with his shot selection and odd humanity (An awesome Mark Kozalek appearance/song as well)

The nude bath scene was spectacular, the rest was not. I'm not a big fan of Michael Caine. He did reasonably good with this rather haphazard story. Others were better, such as Harvey Keitel & Rachel Weisz. The slow pace sometimes felt lifeless, & they tossed in a pearl of wisdom now & then, but also equal parts nonsense. I wish I could say it was deep, but it was mostly dull, abstract & lacked excitement. However, strangely peaceful. Jane Fonda looked like hell & stunk it up with bad lines.

You could squeeze out 5 random breathtaking music videos from this movie and then some. It's got gorgeous cinematography, and pretty people (young and old) played by some of the best actors out there. My problem with Youth is all the ramble never added up to a real conversation.

Takes a little bit to figure out the film's rhythm, but if you aren't won over by the end of it then you must not have a soul. Saying this film had breathtaking cinematography is an understatement. Sure some of the meaning and symbolism of this film went over my head, but the last scene is just so goddamn magnificent I almost cried. Oh, and that one scene with Paul Dano's character (you know the one), sitting through any so-so moment in this film is worth it for that one scene.

A lighthearted, at times heavy-handed, yet equally resonant companion piece to 'La grande bellezza', bursting at its seams with youthful energy, quiet introspection and painful regret. Much like the abovementioned film, it is a film of great visual beauty and elaborate aesthetics, supported by a wonderful cast that shares Sorrentino's vision and dedication at every step.

Youth is an overly self conscious film about aging that has been compared to Fellini by critics who presumably haven't seen much Fellini and/or misunderstood what they saw. He never would have made a film as maudlin and desperate for middlebrow acceptance as Youth. Unlike The Great Beauty, it has no interesting characters or performances to latch on to, and its unwieldy structure reflects a lack of surety over its focus rather than any real narrative ambition. The visuals are just surface gloss.

There's a hell of a lot going on in Sorrentino's latest enigmatic film oddity. Various characters, vignettes and subplots. Thematically he certainly visits some interesting ideas around life, death, old age, human relationships, friendship and memory. It's thought-provoking, almost an overload of material. Thankfully there are some memorably quirky scenes interspersed, and boy do the opulent locales and Swiss Alps look spectacular in this crisp, bright cinematography. Only a little too long.

Sort of like a Hotel Budapest on ambien. Whimsical characters pontificate & converse about their life's shortfalls and other various observations. I had a slight flashback to 8 1/2 during Keitel's flashback, which might have been a hangover from the mesmerising The Great Beauty.

Beautiful examination of the aging process and how it is viewed by people of all ages. Has that same vibrant yearning for life that was such a big part of The Great Beauty, but it is way more subdued and painterly than that hyper film.

Sorrentino should find hilmself a different editor, and he might consider letting someone else do the scriptwriting too. Fireworks in the acting department (I particularly liked Keitel's delivery towards the end) and some pretty pictures don't save this from being a rather flimsy and meagre effort overall.

Youth is a beautiful film, but also very distant. Character development here plays out in short dialogue sequences and rich, atmospheric compositions. I never felt really connected with the elite, well-pampered characters, but I can understand how some could.

A retired composer (Michael Caine) at a Swiss resort spends his days shooting the breeze with his filmmaker friend (Harvey Keitel), trying to connect with his frustrated daughter (Rachel Weisz), and managing the expectations of those around him. What exactly Sorrentino and company are up to here is a bit of a mystery; scene by scene it's funny, touching, and accomplished, but it never quite comes together as a whole and begins to lose steam in the home stretch. The actors enjoy themselves.

While I appreciate its visual sensibility and the rhythmic unfolding of the scenes, I found content of the actual scenes to be nigh insufferable. The focus on Caine's character was good early on, but the film virtually abandons him later, or maybe it just feels that way because of its meandering approach to the characters/story.

Youth (I) (2015) is about old people philosophying about life with a few celebs popping by to sprinkle some life at the luxury holiday spa up in the Swizz apls. Great actors with Michael Caine & Harvey Keitel up front doing their thing with a brief but memorable appearance by Jane Fonda. Also a breathtaking moment with Madalina Diana Ghenea at the pool for a different pleasure. While the babble is simple and destinations lax, I found Youth to be a good thing.

Has the same strengths and weaknesses as Sorrentino's previous film The Great Beauty, but seems less substantial. The script is a bit clunky and things feel a little forced at times. Still, it's a treat for the eyes and Caine is majestic. It also features a higher than average proportion of memorable scenes - the Maradona tennis ball scene for example is sublime.

As is often the case with Sorrentino, it's hard to judge to which degree the film is taking its (not too profound or insightful, but occasionally touching) rhetoric about aging, artistic legacies, etc. at face value and to what extent it's drily deriding the self-importance of the artists who deal in those subjects. That tension is particularly fruitful in the case of 'Youth', concerned as it is with famous men being deflated almost to nothing.

The cinematography is inventive, evocative, and just plum stupid-good. The performances, in particular those of Michael Caine, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Dano are superb. What these pieces combine to accomplish still evades me a bit. It's an art film about artists who talk about art and other artists, and specifically about how art is very artistic. It's once again a depiction of high society, but without most of the savage satirical bite of Sorrentino's last film. Worth seeing for the visuals.

A bit of a messy indulgence, but so sumptuously shot (the scenery is breathtaking) and well performed that Sorrentino almost gets away with it – headlined by Caine and Keitel as the last choices to play lifelong friends, but who fascinatingly mould and meld their uncommonly stoic characters together (and make Fonda’s scorching cameo all the more shocking by comparison). Not sure the sometimes ponderous musings add up to a great deal, and hampered by more than one unnecessary character (Weisz).

An easy watch that I was very comfortably able to sit with. It's very undemanding, though it still provokes the senses with some dreamlike moments, intriguing directions, some mosaic structure, and for the most part invigorating conversations between this assortment of characters who delve in their current live's situations (within the relaxed environments of the Alps). A memorable experience, even though I've forgotten to review here for weeks now (but I'm getting old in my age).

I feel young again after watching this film. I thought that Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel did a great job playing two friends who are both creative-types staying at a Swiss health resort. There are many other crazy characters including Caine's daughter, played by Rachel Weisz, and Paul Dano as an actor staying at the resort. The biggest surprise was seeing Jane Fonda in this film. I wasn't expecting to see her. I can't describe to you why this movie is really good...

I enjoyed watching it once, but I don't think it will leave much of a lasting impact. The dialogue isn't very memorable and the characters aren't that sympathetic. I liked the soundtrack and the film is competently made. It should have had more substance in order for it to be truly good though. But for some reason, as with The Great Beauty, the film seems better than it should be.
