Yuen Ling-yuk

The intercut documentary footage with the narrative film is a bold choice that could easily backfire, for a while I was thinking both parts would be better on their own, but it all comes together really well. A lovely and poignant film.

I saw the extended cut and found it a little too inclusive, too flabby. A lot of clumsy expository material, particularly near the beginning. Doesn't really get going until they film "New Woman", but the intertwining of documentary with fictional scenes is fascinating and innovative.

Maggie Cheung is amazing in this biopic of Ruan Lingyu, but it's often extremely slow. It's directed and made with great restraint, perhaps too much at times. The choice to jump in and out of the movie to make it partly like a making of feature (almost like Abbas Kiarostami) is interesting but I found it consistently breaking the momentum of the narrative, so I'm not quite sure it ultimately worked. Cheung is worth watching, though.
