Sweet obscelenity! Catching this after Gyerekbetegségek (1965) was a 'jump into your racing car' overload, téli fagyi with Ritalin filling. The Blue Jeans Chase with Trouscaillon was the best bit, though things were off when not focused on Zazie herself. Having not read Queneau's book, I think most references (and all wordplay) went right over my head. Still, I'll imagine a pair of Mary Janes perpetually circling the ceiling as a certain 'enfant mal élevée' stands cross-eyed in the corner.

Some great sequences but mostly super annoyed and not my style of humour

I saw this many years ago--back when revival movie houses still existed in New York City--and I still remember having two contradictory reactions simultaneously (much like the French themselves)...that the style was almost surrealist, and also very much like a documentary. Perhaps I'll watch it again one of these years and see if one wins out.

A brash mix of slapstick and surrealism, it's like Looney Tunes on acid. A part of me feels its characters may be too insubstantial to justify feature length, and indeed a few of them are just plain obnoxious, but the sheer animated spirit and energy kept me laughing. It makes fun use of cinematic trickery, but still there's something holding it back from being great cinema.

Like looking through the scope of a manic 12-year-old, this is sheer slapstick, acid-Looney Tunes inspired surrealism. No real plot or character arcs but such vapidness, I believe, was intentional. The high energy and playful camera work kept me laughing the whole ride through. It's satirical, zany, and a wild time. Let Zazie take you for a spin.

Something like Looney Tunes come to life, the film is bursting with colorful scenes, zany action, sight gags, slapstick, wordplay, irreverent humor and wild camera tricks. I have to applaud the energy and inventiveness, it's a unique, anarchic and bold film. However, it's still a bit obnoxious. Very little of the comedy appealed to my sense of humor. It's all too wacky and madcap. Like Hellzapoppin', I admire the spirit of it and had fun at times, but I doubt I'd ever sit through it again.

Except for some amusing visuals and creative camerawork, the frantic style quickly became annoying. Could have most likely worked better as a shorter film.

The over-the-top visuals and setpieces keep it interesting to look at, but man, this really was not funny at all. Hahaha he wore shoes on his hands, put it in the Criterion Collection!

In the beginning of this movie, I was loving its frenetic, Looney Tunes style. But then it gets annoying.

Madcap insanity that I enjoyed much more than I might have expected given the film's style.

The hyperactive style does get a bit tiring, but Malle's use of all these different techniques is just stunning and some of the sequences, especially the chases, are marvelous. I love the comparison to Looney Tunes, which is really quite accurate.

Inventive, but most of the sequences that seemed intended to be charming and free-spirited came across to this viewer as charmless and dated. Without doubt this is a minority opinion, but aside from a few moments I found the film painful and tedious, despite the fact the director is responsible for one of my all-time favourite movies (also a minority opinion).

Zany day in the life of a brat stuck in Paris with her drag queen uncle. Reminded me a bit of Richard Lester’s The Knack, albeit with a couple bowls of sugar smacks and a couple bottles of jolt cola for breakfast.

Slapstick frenzy. Guess you really gotta be on a good vibe to fully enjoy this. Mom goes to Paris to meet her lover and leaves her daughter with her uncle, a "spanish dancer". All Zazie wants is to ride the metro, that is on a strike. There is nothing left to do than run around with her uncle and his band of crazy friends on Paris' packed traffic, on the top of Eiffel Tower or just break a diner into pieces, nearly starting a civil war. Closest we have of a live-action cartoon.

"How a kid sees the world" could be the subtitle, as we follow a seemingly sugar-infused child holiday in Paris for a few days. The story really isn't there, but there's a lot of camerawork and early special effects that I enjoyed. But I never liked Tom & Jerry cartoons, and this is a life-like version of those. A bit too madcap for my tastes, but I bet it would have been fun to have watched it as a kid.
