Zero Charisma

The main guy seems sorta like how Kenny Powers would be if he were a gamer nerd instead of an athlete, and despite a few structural hiccups and some moments that betray the flick's low budget, this is surprisingly compelling stuff. Even manages to work up some genuine suspense come climax time. Not the cringe-fest you might expect, basically--more of a mixture of ONE HOUR PHOTO, OBSERVE AND REPORT, and REVENGE OF THE NERDS. With Kenny Powers.

I almost feel dirty for watching it. While my rpg years were some of the best, I also saw people's character problems bloom within the imaginary boundaries a typical game sets. It's nice to see a lo-fi indie nail this.

The really, really unflattering side of geek culture. Although there r humorous moments the film's real goal is to offer a character study of how sad, petty, pathetic & yet somehow strangely sympathetic a certain geek stereotype can be. It succeeds brilliantly by never trying 2 make the desperate-2-keep-what-little-esteem-he-has protagonist any more likable than he would likely be, but simultaneously showing exactly why he is the way he is.

Falling Down but instead of a besuited badass, the lead character is equipped with only his D20. Dark humour and concise, affecting drama. These poor souls belong to a derided social class, railroaded in their youth into fantasy worlds to find refuge and eke out a little agency - they won't be afforded it elsewhere. Pic wavers between self-satire and social drama which perhaps muddles its intentions, but viewers who can't understand the GM's plight could do with putting some pips into Empathy.

Am I completely missing the point if I wish that there were more roleplaying in this movie? Compare this movie to Slapshot. Story-wise it's not absolutely necessary to actually show the sport, but I go in the theater with an expectation to see some motherfuckers on some ice.

Even parts of comedy and drama, I'd say. Sometimes you laugh at him and sometimes you hurt with him. Sam Eidson is doing a great job portraying his character and definitely pulls his weight as the overshadowing lead.

Definitely had more thought and character depth in it than expected.

Sort of amusing, but the 'unlikable main character' is TOO unlikable to, like, like the movie.
