The nicest thing I can force myself to say is that there's a successfully brooding night-time espionage atmosphere, that's helped further by a couple of intense performances from Hawke. But then again, the filmmaking can be downright incompetent, with these night-time visuals often being far too grainy, along with bad slo-mo, confusing editing, and an overall sense of obscurity and murkiness that doesn't feel intentional.

Better than Siberia, but it cannot escape the usual problems plaguing mid to late career Ferrara because these problems stem from the creative and intellectual limitations of the man himself. Nonetheless, it benefits from moody night photography, Hawke's committed performance, and the curiosity value of being a serious pandemic related film where the dread and disorientation engendered by global lockdowns is woven deeply into the film's fabric.

Viewed November 24, 2021. A great film about the pandemic (the first and likely only great film about the pandemic) because its plot is incomprehensible, but the existential fury and atmosphere of dislocation are overwhelmingly vivid, and that's basically what life has been like these past couple of years.

What if Blackout and New Rose Hotel had a son after 9/11. Digital ruins of Western society written and directed by Abel Ferrara and shot by Sean Prince Williams is just all we need these days. There is just fragments. Saturated lockdown Rome dark nights swallowing an American soldier who thinks he can prevent the world to end, only to find he will actually be the heir to his brother's revolutionary ideas -- 'knock her up and walk away' is just brilliant. Every camera is a gun.

natural lighting is good and all but when it means I can't see anything, what is it good for?

J.J. talks to the camera, much of what happens is displayed as recorded events. There isn't a clear narrative plot, the goal is to show circunstances. There's confusion, paranoia, in some moments the character shows piety and care, in other he searches for drugs and sex; he's not a moral hero. This happens in a militarized world where he is watched either by enemies or the state.
