Only truly works as an emotion - thanks to the (really special, actually) soundtrack and Did They Just?... gore effects, there's a fatalism to the events, death as an inevitability, an inescapable surrender to fear, that makes this film unique even within an ocean of never-ending zombie texts.

Rather huge horror fan here, but was bored by this film. Tons of gore and violence, but little build up or suspense. Further, the acting's horrible and the plot, incoherent. The makeup effects are extremely good, however.

If, like me, the phrase "zombie fights shark" is more than enough 2 get you to watch, be warned that as impressive as that scene is (how the hell they did it pre-CGI is beyond me), it's also probably shorter than you'd like (then again, how could it not be?) & 1 of the few high points in a mostly sluggishly-paced, cheesy, exploitation flick. Still, the zombies, makeup & efx are distinctive given what had to be a pretty low budget.

Despite being very slow in parts, this movie has lots of fun moments (zombie fights a shark) and some quality corpsefeasting. Plus there's the infamous "eyeball impaled on a huge splinter" scene.

Perhaps one of the all-out descriptively violent, carnage, vicious, butchering, savage and completely chaotic film I've ever seen. Lucio Fulci, Italian horror vet has swept everybody off there feet with goregous surroundings in the tropical enviroment, gross-out kills and of course, a zombie-eating shark infested in the deep blue sea. Not fantastic, but definetly worth a long watch, if you can handle it.

In this day and age where a zombie movie is a dime a dozen, having the title "Zombie" alone proves you're a classic amongst classics. Lots of technicolor gore and infected natives makes for a good time, and the shark scene is something that has to be seen to be believed. Unfortunately, all the stuff in-between is about as exciting as cheese between grandpa's toes...except that your grandpa is a better actor than anyone in this movie. Except the shark.

The plot, dialogue, and acting are all pretty ho-hum and uninspired. But some of the effects and stunts are pretty good (the shark vs zombie scene is the clear highlight - that was pretty incredible).

Actually reasonably entertaining, as these things go. Of course, most of the human characters are idiots, but some of the acting is good. The gore effects are fine and totally gratuitous, the music is eerliy catchy, and the plot and execution actually feel pretty fresh for the genre. And a zombie bites a shark. This is a lot of fun.

Starts off slow, even when the zombies show up it's slow, but this movie will be forever elevated to a level much greater than the movie's quality by simple virtue of the underwater zombie versus shark scene.

Despite some great locations, nice cinematography, and plenty of effort put into the zombie costumes and gore effects, Fulci's film is a bit soporific. While there is no shortage of zombies or flesh-eating, most of the action is repetitive, unchoreographed and stilted. There's certainly not much tension. The acting is zombie-like, but unfortunately it's by the actors who are portraying humans. The underwater shark vs zombie fight is a highlight. A pity because this film had huge potential.

well, for the most part this is just a cheap cash-in on the zombie craze of the time, jam packed with weak characters and cliches, but you have to give it points just for audacity. the zombie vs shark scene is pretty amazing, and there are a few other impressive moments throughout. wouldn't call it essential though.

The gore and effects are top notch. Not sure how they did the shark vs. zombie scene without getting killed. Setting the film on an island made it feel fresh, when it was just another zombie gorefest. Overall I really enjoyed it, definitely gotta find the time to watch it with a group of friends.

Fulci was undeniably the master of gore, but I've yet to see a film of his that holds my attention between the awe inspiring deaths. This is probably his best though. The splinter scene is up there with the purge from "City of the Living Dead" for best on-screen death.

A perfunctory story that even at 90 minutes feels padded out, but I've always had a soft spot for tropical settings, and it delivers some good zombie kicks, with particularly visceral effects work. Also has that strangely dreamy quality that always characterizes Italian horror. (And the totally unnecessary, leeringly pornographic nudity as well.)

Bad acting/dubbing aside, it starts off as an ok B-grade zombie film. The scene with the shark is a highlight about halfway through the film. From there, though, the film gets more gory and the interludes between the gore more boring. And the ending is stupid.

An unmanned boat sails into the New York Harbor with a mystery onboard which sends a reporter and a woman on a search looking for her father. Their search will take them to a tropical island suffering from a mysterious epidemic where the dead come back to life. Perhaps Fulci's most coherent effort in a zombie movie has an actual linear storyline. The direction is deliberate in style, the atmosphere evoking a sense of doom lingering like a disease. A well paced and visually haunting film.

Great special effects and plenty of gore, and the overall production values are way better than expected. Essential viewing if you're a fan of the zombie genre, and who'd want to miss the zombie vs. shark fight? There was one scene where I thought, "They're going to cut, they're going to cut, any second now they're going to cut... they didn't cut!" Eye opening.

Fantastically ghoulish zombie nightmare with memorable & gory set pieces, oppressive score and dreamy atmosphere. Fulci's strikingly misanthropic style is hardly loveable but he directs with such measured eye & unwavering intent, it never feels like he's doing things sloppily or by the book. Good visuals & Richard Johnson mostly make up for the bland writing. It has the best (i.e. the most horrible looking) zombies I've ever seen and that underwater shark scene is something truly extraordinary.

(Viewed on 22/05/13): Trust Fulci to take a stupifyingly simple plot and make it incoherent. This is what his fans call 'dream logic', but for most viewers it just looks like plain old fashioned incompetence. Fulci did understand how to create and sustain atmosphere, but Zombi feels almost too grounded, missing the otherwordly qualities of his best work. For gore hounds it's a treat--there are plenty of gruesome scenes of zombies tearing apart flesh--but it's a pretty dull film overall.

Arguably Fulci's masterwork. A great blend of horror, gore, and nightmarish elements that combine to form a highly effective zombie film. The ending is amazing, and the characters while a bit sketchy do provide enough for us to care about them. While Dawn of the Dead (1978) is better, Fulci's entry in the zombie genre is in some ways more in tune with modern day zombie films.

It's far from a flawless film, but it sure is a hell of an entertaining one. While the first hour mostly is built up, teasing the viewer with its two most infamous sequences (the shark vs zombie fight and the eye on a splinter part), the movie really gets going full throttle in the last 20 min when the massive resurrection and attacks begin.

Italian zombie makeup in this era is so very C H U N K Y, like if u agree. The prosthetics are positively caked on, several inches thick. Whenever characters discover zombies, spin the Reaction Roulette. Will they freeze in place as if nothing is happening? Calmly walk away? halfheartedly attack? Patiently wait to be bitten and killed? Or behave like a realistic representation of a human being?

The most popular of Fulci's barf-bag epics, this _Dawn of the Dead_ cash-in (originally titled _Zombie 2_ so as to appear to be a sequel to _Dawn_, which was released in Europe as _Zombie_) just may be the ultimate Neapolitan living dead gross-out of them all. With mounds o' maggots, ruptured arteries spewing like out-of-control firehoses, and one unforgettable shot of Karlatos's bulging eye pierced by an enormous shard of wood, this is definitely not recommended to those who like _Free Willy_

Sure, Zombi 2 is no masterpiece. The acting is bad and the story kinda moves at an odd pace, but that's not what we're here for. We are here to see some zombie action, and we've got some good scenes here! The zombie effects look great! They really outdid themselves with the makeup effects. I loved seeing some actual zombies rising from the grave. It's an image you surprisingly don't see very much in zombie movies. Would've given the movie a higher grade if there were more zombie scenes.

The story is subpar, but that's not really the focal point. Featuring buckets of gore, plenty of gruesome moments & several famous scenes including a shark vs. zombie fight, this is memorable for its visuals if nothing else. Unfortunately, the plot never measures up to those visuals, as it's a jumbled mess that seems to skip ahead several times without any warning, and the reason for the zombie outbreak is never really explained. Worth a look for horror fans, but not really anybody else.

This is my favorite zombie movie. The zombie effects are fantastic, the story is (relatively) unique, and the acting actually doesn't make me cringe. But more importantly, the movie is just so much fun. Fulci may not be a great director, but here he was able to do what most makers of zombie films failed to do: he made a zombie movie that felt original. Along with Romero's films, Zombi 2 is one of the most often imitated.

After some effort to determine if Zombi 2 was really a sequel, I discovered this is a follow up to Dario Argento's re-edited Italian version of Romero's Dawn of the Dead. I would love to see that even if only to hear the scoring by Goblin. The original title was Nightmare Island which I consider more appropriate. Fulci did not want this film to be tied to Dawn of the Dead, but it must have been a business decision. I could only find an english dubbed version which could factor into why I didn't
