An exercise in bizarre stuff happening for no particular reason.

I've often seen this called the Chinese X-Men and considering every other character is some magic-weilding weirdo with a cool name, it's a pretty apt analogy. Kind of old though, so don't expect a lot in the SFX department.

Utter nonsense if you're not Chinese *and* familiar with the thousands of pages of source material, yet they still did *a lot* for 1983. The effects make creative use of limited resources and make up for it with abundant imagination. I mean come on, magic *eyebrows*? Riding giant elephant statues? Check out the sequel for even more transcendent, entertaining confusion.

Completely apeshit action-adventure whips out all the old 80ies effects by the buckets. Too kidshow-silly to be truly effective and often it just seems like an excuse to throw flashing shit at the viewer, but it's quite a romp, nonetheless.

Zu is ridiculously weird and great for all the same reasons (Long Brows' power is... eyebrows that can grow and restrain the Blood Demon... I love that guy). Kinda hard to imagine ILM helped with the SFX, because they suck and definitely ruin the experience of some scenes; and narratively, there are so many red-herrings and macguffins you hardly know what's going on at any one moment. Ultimately, though, this is a film experience unlike even kung fu flicks, and one you'll remember for a while

Very up and down film. It has some cool fights and, at least at the beginning, a decent enough narrative to tie them together. But as it continues that narrative becomes more and more convoluted to the point where the ending makes no sense. It doesn't help that the film is full of very dated effects which can be ignored as a little campy at the start but by the end are so prominent that it's impossible to ignore their badness.

This is one barmy film. I must confess that I lost track of who was fighting whom, and why, as things progressed, but it held my attention. There was a lot of imagination on show, some effective effects and sequences, and a whole lot of crazy. Long Brows was a bit of an unexpected treat. Lots of colour, some enjoyably incomprehensible "fights", and plenty of bemusing nonsense. Actually, my head hurts a bit.

It's very imaginative and creative, unfortunate that doesn't make up totally for the mess this movie is. While the basic overall story is very simple, the plot is way more difficult to follow than it should be. The editing is so frantic it's unclear in many scenes what exactly is going on, hindering my enjoyment of this. The best aspect, beside the aforementioned creativity, is the humor, especially in the first 15 minutes in the "real" world.
