paradigm shifts + alternate realities
A Collaborative collection created by livelove
"This is a collection of films involving 2 (or more) opposing/competing/alternate realities, that each give the film a completely different meaning, thus causing a paradigm shift as the movie switches from one reality to another. As this happens, the story told is revealed in a drastically different light, shattering the viewer's preconceptions and altering the viewer's understanding so profoundly that the entire storyline must be contemplated in a new context by the viewer who is forced to revisit everything that happened during the film.
This is different from just finding out, who the murderer is. When the viewer encounters a paradigm shift, it is a radical alteration of his perception of events from the beginning of the film through to the end.
---- Unfortunately, for the time being, I can only come up with some pretty mediocre examples, that don't really hit the mark. I will add better examples later on.
Examples (some spoilers ahead):
• a person, who is either insane or experiencing supernatural events
• a foe taken for a friend or vice versa
• ambiguous clues possibly suggesting that a person has been dead all along the movie.
• In "K-Pax" the audience wonders whether the protagonist is insane or an alien.
• In "Shutter Island", Leo DiCaprio is either a US Marshal or a psychiatric patient."
