Film Noir

A Collaborative collection created by PeaceAnarchy

"Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize moral ambiguity and sexual motivation. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. It is difficult to define film noir in any conventional sense. Film noir has been defined as a genre, an anti-genre, a movement, a visual style, a prevailing mood or tone, or a period. Borde and Chaumeton, originators of the term, identify six key attributes. By their definition, film noir is "oneiric, strange, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel..." and it aims to "create malaise". Whether or not this is an adequate definition is still open to debate.
